Standalone ECU or Cold air intake?

hey guys, just recently got me a g37 and I got a budget about 500 dollars to mess around. I was looking at either a standalone ECU or cold air intakes.
I would love to go with the cold air intakes immediately, however I was told that I would start to run lean if I did that without a tune. do you guys know anything about this?
also do you guys have any recommendations for an ECU? I have no clue which one to pick even after looking at the sticky post for mods list.

Depends completely on the CAI you go with. Unless you're doing some monster build, you don't need a standalone ECU...

At $500 a stand-alone ECU like MoTec or AEM infinity aren’t anywhere in your price range, plus like the previous poster mentioned unless you go all out you won’t need it.

You could go Ecutek or RevUp, which I’m guessing is probably what you were referring to anyway. But $500 is still on the low side. For reference a local shop will dyno tune a mild setup, something like full bolt one’s, for $600. But that doesn’t include any hardware or anything. You drive in they tune the car and you leave with a new tune on the ECU.

Intakes for this car are also hilariously overpriced. If you need CARB compliant then the Stillin’s are your only really performance option. Personally I’d go with these:

They are a z1 knockoff, and vqcarbon sells the exact same unit for $350 or something like that. According to FB posters(take that for whatever you like) they are identical to the Z1’s. Buy that, replace the filters, and save a few hundred to put towards other things.

My 2 cents.

For $500 I'd get afe dry filters and test pipes. Within your budget and will net a little more pep than the stock setup.

thx for all your answers guys. will definitely help in making a decision. however I found out today that the dealer actually patched up an exhaust leak that is located just after the cats. Kind of annoyed about that but that's probably what ill have to do first. Man does it sound aweful though. raspy as all hell.

thanks a lot for your insight! really appreciate it. will definitely look into that intake you linked. however my current issue is that on my 5 hour drive back home today, I started hearing an exhuast leak. apparently the dealer that i bought it from decided to patch it up with some temporary solutions. That willl probably have to come first. Am I right for assuming that the exhuast system in this g37 is header, cats, resonator, muffler, tips? because i think the leak is right after the catalytic converter. Do you have any recommendations for cat back exhaust that I can do for under 1k including labor?

Man, you're barking up the wrong tree looking for cheap repairs/ upgrades on this car. Your best bet would be to find a used stock exhaust piece (probably the Y pipe if it's right after the headers) and get that installed - there are plenty of folks (myself included) with their stock exhausts in the classifieds area.

For $500 I'd do a full tune up (plugs and coils), new filters, cabin filter, and better fluids like redline. Much better long term investment and improvement. 2nd $500 is swaybars.
