G37 buyer Qs : AWD vs RWD

Sorry, this probably gets asked ALL the time. I did review some posts about others looking to buy but the AWD option didn't seem to get covered. I am looking to buy a G37 and thinking the "S" model at the very least. Stock is fine, i don't want or need a bunch of performance mods...although intake seems quite common. Also looking for auto tranny.

Is the AWD much better/different? Is fuel mileage significantly different? I don't plan to winter drive it in snow and we only get a few days of ugly snow per year. I am essentially located in Pacific NW.

In ANY model (not just AWD), are there any model years to avoid, or cxertain years that are considered the best? Special things to be aware of? I see a few 08 models that I like the price of a lot better. The AWD model I see is a 2010.

And dare I ask...but are G35 models that much different/inferior? I am not going to be pushing the car that hard, just want something sporty looking, reliable, easy and cheap to fix.

thanks.

There more threads in this particular forum that can help you decide.

AWD vs RWD really depends upon your comfort with RWD in the few snow days you get. AWD is the heaviest G and has the limpest handling, though AWD owners still think the car handles well. You can swap the rear sway bar from an S coupe/sedan to significantly improve feel with little cost as they regularly come up for sale in the site's classifieds forum.

Just to add a bit to slartis' reply~
Coupe or sedan? the S model coupe in AWD has more performance features vs. the AWD S Sedan. Both RWD S models have the same performance upgrades.

In your situation I'd lean toward RWD, especially since it sounds like you'll have another vehicle option if the snow gets tough to handle. There are more aftermarket parts for the RWD, and the AWD will have more more mechanical parts that could fail or need service.

As far as years to avoid, the models prior to 2012 have an inferior oil passage gasket behind the rear timing cover, if this fails it's about $2k to repair. It's not inevitable but something to be aware of.

As far as G35s, the 07+ Sedan is almost the same as the last G37 Sedan produced, the motor and AT are different (a 5sp AT, and a 3.5l motor) but the body and chassis are basically the same w/ some front bumper/grill/headlight updates.

I ran through many of the same questions before purchasing my G37 S about a month ago, was going back and forth on awd vs rwd decided to go rwd since I have a truck as a daily and rwd are much more enjoyable to drive in MY opinion.

No, it's neither better, and the differences aren't good, unless you absolutely, positively NEED AWD.

For the sedan, the AWD S, with the exception of the 18" vs 17" wheels, is just a cosmetic package. No BBK, no LSD, no sport suspension, no fast ratio steering.

I'd stick with a RWD S + snow tires.

If you're not driving it in snow, there's zero reason to get AWD.
