Arrow Potential Buy! -NEED ADVICE-

Okay, So I'm looking at picking up a 2010 G37s m6t this coming week. It's exact mileage is 71,067. It looks to be in immaculate condition, All packs included. (tech, journey) Etc. Was posted for 17k I talked down to 15.5k! ANYWAYS. The car fax recently shed some light, and that's where the car is from....THE NORTH. My concern is salt damage. I'm noob as hell and I don't want to jump into something that's going to set my wallet on fire. I've included a picture.

Is the damage reversible, is it even all that bad, and is this a good deal?! ^.^

THANKS!

-James.

If you're not in the rust belt and don't want a rusted out car, I'd skip it. You can't "fix" that. If you want to swap out a bunch of rusted parts that's about the only thing you can do. Of course people up north drive cars like that every day without thinking about it.

I live in South Carolina. The car is in Charleston, SC. It lived half its life up north. So you'd go as far to say that the rust pictured kills that deal? That sucks.

You could put it on a lift and get under there and see the extent of the rusting, luckily most of the critical unibody structure has good rustproofing. Like Black Betty said, there will be a lot of fasteners/brackets, etc that may need to be replaced down the road, more so than a car that hasn't been through that. This one would have to be your call, but I would give it a very close look if you can access a lift.

Welcome to the site BTW!

It may be perfectly fine. But living outside of rust country I personally don't like buying cars with rust. It makes everything harder to work on when the fasteners or parts are all rusted. That's just me.

In the words of a famous musician "Rust never sleeps". You cannot get rid of rust once it starts. It is like an iceberg, you will only see 10% of it. I would take a pass. BTW I live in the mid west where salt use is prevelant. Newer cars have pretty good rust protection and manufacturers have pretty good rust warranties but there are plenty of cars out there so why start with one that has problems to save a few bucks IMHO.

I wouldn't call it a deal breaker, only small parts will really feel the effects whereas major components will be rust proof to an extent. Like mentioned, get under there and take a good look.

I wouldn't even think twice about it, although living where I do any car that's more than a year or two old will have a bunch of surface rust underneath. My 2012 looks a bunch worse than the picture you posted.

most exhaust components, bolts, and such will have some surface rust ... as long as the sheet metal and major stuff is ok.

you can get a couple cans of Fluid Film (picked up at Lowe's, $8.99/can, or Amazon, etc) and spray the underside of the car to keep rust at bay. hit the exhaust bolts and heat shield bolts, but try to avoid rubber stuff.

i just got done putting some big hose clamps around the heat shields of my other car because the bolts were rusted away and they were rattling - wish i would have discovered Fluid Film sooner for that vehicle.

It was a very smart idea of joining this forum and posting your thread asking for advice before pulling the trigger. There are a lot of knowledgeable people who can pretty much answer any and all questions you have regarding your car. Best of luck with your decision and let us know what you end up doing. Hope you can become an official G owner and part of this forum!
