About to make a purchase!
Hi everyone. I plan to buy a G37S with the 7AT. I'm hoping to get some advice from you guys.
I read about the timing cover gaskets failing on pre-2012 models. I found a 2011 which is set up exactly how I want it but this is the main thing that concerns me. I see there are quite a few stories about people having to spend $2-$3k on the fix.. But the only thing I'm wondering is how common is this issue, really? 1/10? 1/100? 1/1000ish?
I also read about the 7AT's being rough and hesitant, is it annoying to you guys? I test drove one at a dealership and I thought it drove fine although it was a 2013.
Anyway, I know this info has been covered in other threads, just thought I would get some opinions for 2016
THX

Welcome to the forum
The AT takes a bit of getting used to, I don't have a major problem with it, it tends to be a bit hesitant w/ downshifts and some lag at times. I recently changed out my ATF and it seems to be a bit quicker and more decisive w/ it's shifts.
As far as the gasket failures, I haven't heard of any database that would reflect the % that have failed. I have close to 80k miles on our 09 and so far so good. Not the greatest feeling that it may fail. I do most of my own work so I'd just get the parts and take the time to fix it, but it's definitely not something you'd want to go through.
Ideally if you can locate a 2012 w/ the features you want, might just be worth it to pay a bit more for piece of mind.
