New guy from New York

Hi all... I read a lot on this board before I bought my car and now I'm about 14 hours into being an Infiniti G37x owner and leaving the world of BMW.

I decided I wanted to get a new car and quickly... while my 02 330i never had a single mechanical problem in 4+ years, in the past 12-14 months, I had to dump over 5k into repairs on the 08 335xi (transmission died entirely and needed to be replaced, $1400 coolant leak) and there were some other small issues with the car (though with BMWs, small issues cost a ton to fix... something I didn't have to deal with until I had one that started breaking a lot).

To make matters worse, this newer transmission (the one I had put in a year ago) was beginning to act like the old one I had to replace... slipping trying to get into gears, couple hard shifts, generally just not acting right/normal. In short, I was afraid to drive it because at some point soon, it was probably going to break and I can't afford to deal with that nonsense again.

I looked around at comparable cars, read reviews, took a test drive and got into an Infinity G37x. Seems slow compared to the 335, but it's probably the fact that there's less torque so it 'feels' slower... like it takes a longer time to get where the 335 got to much quicker. I don't feel like I have that on-demand punch/power as there's a much more perceptible delay between me shifting and the car shifting. Driving-wise, it's not nearly as "fun", but that could also be attributed to me not being used to what the car can actually do or being familiar enough with it as I've actually only driven it about 3 times since buying it. Just spouting my initial impressions...

However, that aside, the interior is MUCH more modern (BMW interiors always seemed dated to me, but I was getting them more for the quickness than the interior), it's much more comfortable and, best of all, there's a warranty on it (bumper to bumper for the next 2 years and engine/trans for the next 5). Also, instead of the 95000+ miles the BMW had, this one has 13k... newest car I ever bought.

It's gonna take time to get used to the (perceived?) speed difference, but the warranty, updated interior, comfort, warranty, new color, warranty, etc are great things (you can clearly tell what I'm most excited about... hahaha).

As for the car, it's a Moonlight White w/ Stone sedan... nice looking ride.

Look forward to spending more time here as a contributing member as opposed to my pre-purchase lurking!

I've never really done much modding (although I did do the Alpina transmission flash in the 335xi). I'm still undecided on that... I wouldn't mind getting black floormats, but that's hardly considered modding... hahaha.

Seriously, though, I'm not a huge fan of the stock rims so something there may happen at some point. I spent a good portion of the day yesterday reading a 'show me your modded G' thread... think I got about 60 pages in out of 193 looking for eventual ideas. Probably won't go too crazy until the warranty wears out, though. I'm a DIY guy with many, many things, but cars aren't one of them... usually if something goes wrong on my car, I drive it somewhere, hand over my credit card and weep.

your assessment between 335 and g37 sounds pretty similar to mine. My wife has a 2011 335i sedan w sport pkg, I have a 2011 G37S sedan 6MT. Her car definitely FEELS faster, though in reality, I think they are very similar. Her car feels much sportier, tighter steering feel, stiffer suspension, etc. I don't like the abruptness from the 6AT in the bimmer, but it is definitely a lot of fun when feeling sporty. I couldn't agree more about the BMW interior feeling older, though my wife doesn't feel the same.

It's the same orange LED stuff they've had forever. I always thought I should be getting more out of a luxury car in terms of aesthetics and useful gadgets, but I didn't want to trade the BMW power. My wife thinks the G is from the future... hahaha. That said, she could not care less about cars... to her, a fancy car is as impressive as fancy **** on a bull.

Stock G37 vs Stock 335 shouldn't be too hard to acclimate to in terms of power. Very similar peak power, just in different ways. The G really screams in the high RPMs on the highway. For city/suburb driving the extra torque of the 335 would feel faster. Both are nice cars, congrats on the upgrade.

Yes... upgrade, lol. In reliability at least.

BMW cars are great but not really reliable... you will have no issues with your new car and it should feel like an upgrade!

Welcome, the biggest advantage the 335 has is the ease and low cost of upgrades to get the power up, other than that I believe the G is a much better value for the money. Post some pics when you can ;D
