Revving an Automatic Car?

Out of curiosity, would it be harmful to rev a warmed up car (G37xS) while in park to say 4-5k RPMs? Thanks guys!

I sure hope not! How else are people around me supposed to know how big my engine is?

It's fine, I wouldn't do it too much though.

Revving an engine that's not under load to high RPMs puts undue strain on it. That's why there's an "idiot rev limiter" to keep you from redlining the engine when is not in a gear. I think it's at about 5K but I'm not sure.

I don't recommend it.

The trick is to rev it and drop it in to gear. We had a name for it back in the day... Neutral drop. Sort of like dumping the clutch, but not quite.

Tried that once and my G sedan wouldn't engage the gears till the revs fell off. I think it's a safety feature or part of the traction control system. I don't recommend doing that. It would propably hurt the pocket book if something broke trying it.

LOl. You know, because it was written on the internet, it's true!!

It's a good thing they put these nannies in place for people that don't know better.

Did that with my first car in my HS days. Car accelerated so fast, but the tranny got left behind.

Knock on wood, I've never even dumped the clutch in my camaro or this car. Just don't see a need for it.

Yeah, these G's have enough power to squeel the tires a bit as it is from a dead stop. My buddy did that one to many times in a "83 Honda civic hatch-back. Engine blew and a door somehow broke off it's lock mechanism. It was funny as hell till we started realizing we didn't have a way home.
