Modding questions

So I planned on picking up a G37S coupe just as a car, normal drive to work car, no engine mods just aesthetics. But lets face it, everytime I look at my STI I get an itch for the G, the car isn't even here yet and I've got a plethora of crap I plan on getting already. So my questions to you guys are:

1. How sensitive are these cars to mods? Is it pretty standard as in intake(short ram) and cbe dont need a tune or does everything need a tune?

2. When the time comes, are there a lot of reputable tuners or is it few and far between?

3. How hard are these cars to work on yourself? Following a lot of build threads and forum surfing I noticed a lot of people take their cars to a shop to get work done.

I know this is very noobish and I did search but my mind got lost in the bustle of things. The 2 forums I'm on for the G do have a lot of answers but some are outdated. This car/motor setup is very new and different to me and I'm starting to mix up information between things. Thanks in advance!

Hello!

I post this as a blanket statement when new people ask about mods for the g37. I spent a lot of time sifting through this forum and other places online.

I'll address the rest of your questions in a second post.

I posted this for another new member, and I think it applies here.

Here's the cliff's notes version of most of the questions new members ask.
1. Everyone disagrees on which external mods look good. That being said, the popular mods people do externally are:
Body kits (IPL or Aero or Top Secret)
New wheels (Vossen, Stance, and Enkei are popular brands), check threads to see if they'll clear your brakes instead of just posting up a wheel fitment thread.
Lights (people change the lenses to TSX lenses, paint the housings, delete amber corner, and add LED rings)
Carbon Fiber (most things are available in carbon fiber, VIS and Seibon are popular mid-price brands, fitment is always a concern)
Painted calipers
smoked lights
Debadging
LED interior light swap (diode dynamics or other companies offer kits containing all the LED's you need)
Spoilers (front chin, rear decklid, rear wing type, roof mounted spoiler)
Diffuser (autokits x, other companies)
Plastidip (hideous, don't do it)

2. The best HP performance mod you can do is Forced Induction. These cars love boost, and any bolt ons (exhaust, intakes) will see only marginal HP boosts. That being said:

Cold Air Intakes (K&N, Sillen, Takeda, R2C, Injen)
Intake Manifold (Motordyne)
Header (Fast Intentions, idk about other companies')
High Flow Catalytic Converters (Fast Intentions, Berk, Stillen, among others)
Test Pipes (same companies as Cats) Catback Exhaust (Tanabe, HKS, Greddy, Borla, Fast Intentions, Motordyne, Magnaflow, others)
Tune (either dyno professional, or handheld tuner unit)
Grounding kits (DIY)
Forced Induction (GTM twin turbo, GTM twin super, GTM single super, Stillen Super)

3. Suspension mods
Sway Bars, biggest bang for buck mod, (Hotchkis, Cusco, Stillen, Eibach)
Front Tower Strut Bar (Cusco, GT spec, others)
Coilovers vs. Springs Coilovers allow user to adjust drop exactly as needed, springs have 1 drop height Coilovers allow user to adjust drop without changing spring compression, springs do not Coilovers and Springs may both require camber kits.
Various chassis braces (may not be compatible with whatever exhaust you choose)

Welcome to the forum, use the search bar. Hope this is useful!

As I mentioned before, bolt ones have only marginal boosts in Hp to this car. Forced induction is the big horsepower booster here. Some people have short ram intakes, but the favorite is Stillen Generation 3 ultra long tube Intakes.

Many people do the bolt ons without a tune, but it's probably a good idea to do so after you finish whatever mods you plan on doing.

2. When the time comes, are there a lot of reputable tuners or is it few and far between?

There are many tuners that work on G37s, I think the leader in tuning is Uprev with their Osiris package. They have lists of tuners that hold tuner licenses from Uprev.

3. How hard are these cars to work on yourself? Following a lot of build threads and forum surfing I noticed a lot of people take their cars to a shop to get work done.

I've done every bit if my upgrades myself in a parking garage. There is an extensive DIY section here. In most cases, you'll be trading time for money. You'll save money, but it will take you 2-4 times longer to do it yourself. I've done radar hard wires, intake installs, rattle can painting, headlight installs, even a full cat and catback swap.

Doing stuff yourself is possible, but it is definitely more convenient to take it to a shop.

As always, PM me if you have additional questions.

Cheers,
Anthony
