Rear or AWD?

I was under the impression that the all wheel drive on our cars remains off when it doesnt need it...so technically on dry normal conditions its RWD....the AWD kicks in when you need it like when the car detects slippage it will put power to the front wheels...or is that incorrect and the awd is always on?

This is correct. 100% rear, then up to 50% front as needed.
