Used Car Buying Woes...

I have been searching for 2 months now for a GOOD used car, but my luck sucks. Most people are great photographers, because when you get up on the car you see all sorts of atrocities. The 99 Accord coupe I drove last night however was pretty decent, but its 7k for the price w/ 98k miles, and the car has not had a waterpump/timing belt changed, so that turns the car from a 7k beater to an almost 8k one.

Im having the worst luck so far. I started out wanting an integra, but most are beat to death or were heavily modified at one time. I went to accord coupes but price is usually an issue. I done know about the reliability of eclipses so I havent dug deep. I dred getting a civic, and the 2000 celicas are way overpriced.

Anyone have any good suggestions?

My initla list was as follows:
  • Acura Integra
  • Honda Accord Couope
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse
  • Toyota Celica (current body)

Im looking for other possible reliable models to look for, knowledge of reliability on the models above, and any other help.

thanks in advance.

I think Gen 2 eclipse (the last gen to be turboed) had transmission problem, I think it was once you past 50K so buying a use one is probably not a good idea. You probably can't get a Gen 3 that cheap but I have not heard of the same issue for this gen. I'd go with a Civic. Accord are somewhat pricey unless you go back to the 5th Gen (94-97). I had one and made it to 200K, would of lasted longer if I hadn't cracked the tranny over a bump. My buddie's accord went to nearly 250K b4 it was totaled. It'll last you a lifetime, so need not worry high millage accord, as long as you give it oil and gas, you'll get your money's worth.

A 1st-gen AWD eclipse/talon/laser would be a fun car for cheap, and good for winter.

You could get an AWD Impreza RS with high miles for under 10K

Most old LT1/LS1s could be had for cheap. Although people would probably think you're either a wannabe thug (caprice, impala) or confused redneck (camaro, firebird)

If he doesnt mind high miles, he can get a 3rd gen for 8K, possibly even a V6.

The 3rd gen I4 is a different engine than the 2nd gen, no major problems yet.

Hondas and Toyotas are going to be pretty solid for well of 200k miles. I'd definitly add the Civic Coupe and the 6th gen Celica ('94-99). As with anything just look out for abuse.

I sold my '97 Accord EX sedan w/80k miles for $7k in the spring of '05. Right now, I would guess the same car would go about $5.5-6k. It was a great car and handled the snow pretty well. I had to let it go to fund the G35 but it's definately a good car to keep an eye out for.

The '97 is worth looking in to. The other has been moded. If they've been pushing it hard, that will decrease the life expectancy.
