When do you guys plan on switching to Winter Tires/Wheels?

With Fall here, and the Winter snowfall right around the corner, when are you guys/girls planning on switching to your winter wheel/tire combo (if you have them)? Unlike some of you, I don't have a beater car and will have to use the G to get to and from work during the winter season. I really hope the winter isnt too bad because I have yet to purchase any winter packages for the car. Lately, the winters in NoVA have been fairly mild and the streets are taken care of rather quickly. Will I have a big problem driving around in the OEM 19s after the plows have shoveled/salted the roads? Should I start searching for tires now or should I wait. I really want some OEM 17s with blizzaks or all season tires...anyone have ideas?

I will likely gruel it out. I will be living only 5 miles from work, so no biggie. Besides, hopefully by the time snow falls, I will have my beater truck from my dad. (selling not giving)

If you are gonna get a set though, get them now, cus they will go up later.

i live in the hills of Western MD, I learned the hard way that I need winter tires. I plan to switch to winter tires but I am not sure when exactly I should purchase them.

For those of you who will "tough it out", does it mean you're not going to drive the car? If you're shopping for winter wheels/tires, I suggest you do it soon due to availability. By mid november, stocks tends to get lower and by december, a lot of sizes and brand name tires are out of stock since most New England states will hit winter first and buy them out. I plan get the wheels soon and tires by the end of october. I'll probably install them in early december since it's pretty cold then and the summer tires rubber compound won't perform as well once it's cold. For the wise, I would stay off the road with summer tires during Dec-Mar.

I won't be driving in any type of bad weather/threat of bad weather. If its a sunny winter day with no bad forecasts I'll drive the G.

drove around last winter/year with the G on stock 18s w/ the michelin pilots...well it is dangerous in that you have very little IF any traction with these summer performance tires. HOWEVER, as long as you drive slow enough and careful enough and your not TOO far from work, you might be ok with a dusting. but once the snow accumulates....good luck. maybe w/ some all season tires, but the 18s and 19s w/ the summer performance tires wont do you any good!!

Some years can be mild but I wouldn't risk getting stuck in the office or on the roads without at least all season tires. I was lucky enough to get stuck in the blizzard of '03 in an Accord at the time. Driving from Va Tech to MD took 13 hours for roughly 300 miles since I-81 was closed for 4-5 hours while people were still on it. Driving that night felt like driving on the moon. There was 3-4 ft of snow on the side of the road and all you can see is white. Till this day, I'm amazed how well the Accord handled the snow in overdrive at 50+ mph. This was the only way I could of made it home with the gas I had left since all the gas stations were closed during the I-81 closure.

our winters are getting milder and milder probably due to global warming/ozone depletion but regardless I should only have a problem in my development.
