There's no cost. In fact when you go to Reston I remember getting the ez-pass immediately there. They just went into the back and activated it. There's only a charge when you run through tolls and if you signup for the automatic billing i think.

I think there's a $10 deposit if you DONT sign up for the automatic billing and if you do sign up its free.

I love my EZpass (ezpassmd.com). I didn't realize that you could get one for ***** and giggles. I thought you had to be a daily commuter in order to do that. I love having it. The best is when I go through the harbor tunnel b/c usually there is some a-hole following me and trying to race me. Nothing beats blowing through the ezpass lane while he has to sit through a line to pay $2.

You can get your EZpass from any of the participating states. The fees differ from State to State. A year or so ago Dr. Gridlock in the Washington Post was hyping MD and NJ as I recall as the cheapest. VA at the time was not participating - they are now.

Looking at the VA Terms and Conditions, you must agree to use it at least once every six months and if you don't use it for a year you forfeit the monies in your account.

Again, each state is different as to deposits, fees, etc, etc. Some even charge you for sending you a monthly bill (VA). A Quarterly bill is "free."

SaltiDawg, a quick question woudl be say I am to get one in VA but never use it in VA but only use it in MD and points north. Does it register as me using it? I would assume so since the tolls would still be taken out of my account. Reason is I'm trying to get one for my parents but they live in MD so i'd think they would only use it there and never in VA but the Reston office is right by my work so I thought I'd pick one up for them

Apparently you can order your EZ pass from any one of the 13 participating states. I would get it from the state that charges the least fees and/or has the friendliest policy if you are an infrequent user.

Say you use it once a year for the trip to FL from your summer home in VT. The 11 months the pass is not used means they likely have your $25 deposit plus the credit card's previous charge to maintain a minimum $35 balance.

Bottom line, if ease in picking one up is important to you than go for it. I do believe that you can't open an account in their names for them... they could do it on-line however.

I hope I haven't screwed this up. You might want to give them a call.

My account here bills me everytime my balance falls below a certain amount. I was being billed $25 but my frequency of use increased so they bill me $35 at times when my account is low. Check out the website I listed. They just mailed me my tags, didn't have to pick it up.

I have easy pass you can usually get one from any toll facility that has an admin office.Like the baltimore tunnels. They are free you set up an account.Tolls =2 my toll is 40 cent. The toll leaving md i think is 4.00 .plus it is faster i use mine everyday . It bills like Stan said it is 3 months or a certain dollar amount limit but it is cheaper.
