SLK 55 encounter

Sorry for the cross post. Just wanted to share the post with my fellow MD/VA/DC G drivers.

First things first. Disclaimer here.. I'm not a "street racer". But I do like to push every now and then. Just being honest. So, If you don't condone any types of spirited driving on public roads, please stop reading now.

Well, coming home today around 6:00 PM minding my own business.. very light traffic, relaxing, sun still out but getting darker, just listeng to music. Out of the left corner of my eye I see a benz.. black, amg wheels.. omg, the thing was sweet. I was in chill mode, so wasn't thinking about fooling around.. persay. I happen to get behind the guy at a light.. three lane highway (hwy 210 heading towards DC). A few cars are in front and on both sides of us. The light changes, and he starts doing 15 to 50 mph pulls.. you know, slowing down a bit, letting space get between him and the car in front of him to do this. This happens like 3 times.. revving his engine at lights, the works. That V8 engine note was beautiful btw.

So anyway, he's basically goading/ teasing me.. and goads me one to many times. Probably bragging to his 110 pound girlfreind in the passenger seat. He pushes off a bit, this time to get onto an off ramp towards DC, from hwy 210 to hwy 295. I'm like "ok then, I'll play", and at the last second turn off to follow. Now he knows its on.

I basically get on his a$$. We both push it, slight right incline to a straight, then to a long 25-30 ish degree left turn, both of us maintaing control, both cars hugging the road, (actually gaining on him a bit) suspension bouncing on slightly uneven pavement, to a down hill straight. Both on the limit.. and I'm still right there with him. I'm thinking I was in his draft, so I'm figuring that is helping me out a bit.. or he was somewhat timid, or a mixture of both. Even so, I gotta say, I was really proud of the G35's handling (19's sports suspension). Being as heavy as it is, when you aren't thinking about it's weight, especially being in the heat of the moment, it truly handles like a sports car.. vcd off. I was definately one with the car.

Anyway, we hit a few spots of traffic (65 mph is considered traffic at this point) on 295, both of us itching for traffic to open a bit to get a lane. I work my way up front this time, and push it hard, losing him in some traffic.. but slow up so he can catch up, and he gets behind me. I'm in 4rth gear at about 4500..down shift. Had very little rpms left, didn't get a good boost to redline. Probably should've slowed a little more and then downshifted. Anyway as I was saying, I downshift to 3rd and push WOT, we split lanes (I go right) and I see him in my left view mirror two lanes over, basically starting to walk me.. pretty decisively, on a straight stretch of road to a slight 15 degree right. Then more traffic. At this point I'm like ok.. time to shut it down.

Just wanted to see what the slk could do. Expected to get blasted.. and more than likely would've if it were just a stop light race. I'm sure this guy thought I had something under the hood, or was perhaps thinking to himself that stock '05 G35's where better than he thought. Perhaps he wasn't that great of a driver. In any event, he'll definitely think twice about the next G coupe he sees. Ok.. maybe he won't be thinking about it too hard .. He has an slk 55.. but I'm sure the G35 has earned some respect points today.

that car should walk you in a straight line. as far as cornering and handling, I don't think those cars have too much on us.

Nice read. I pulled with an old 911 turbo the other day.... We don't really need to discuss the outcome though.

great story, all I would like to say is that our car eats older SLKs for breakfast. At least the ones I've driven against. I've also got this thing that whenever I see a bmw 330ci or audi a4 i have to speed by them, just to show them how I saved 10 grand on my car and it can dust theirs .

oh I get raped horribly like I did by Lek's friend Dan in his Evo. When Evo's or STi's rev race me they know I'm just doing it for fun 'cause there's no way in hell I'm gonna beat one of them. But weaving through traffic with them is a ton of fun.

Yeah. It was a lot of fun just to be able to hang. I just know the guy was trying to show off to his girl, which made it even better. I really had no chance on a straight away. Lucky for me we did'nt have a long stretch. That thing pulls hard.

Oh yeah.. funny thing is.. 30 min later I make my way back to MD through Suitland. I merge to Route 5 towards waldorf. And see a rx7 florida tags with an exhaust kit, and a late ninties Camaro. I wing past them at 90.. Rx7 is cool.. like "get that little G outta here". Camaro catches on and pushes so I push yet again.. all I hear is engine on my left getting louder. Yesterday was a pretty dangerous day for me.
