Ethanol does burn hotter. It is actually a higher octane fuel. As stated before it would be bad for the engine at higher rpms when you are pushing it.

Cars that are truly designed for the fuel have a better lining in the fuel tank and the higher temps are taken into consideration for the higher octane.

I heard that the 10% stuff is the "winter" fuel. And that's what they sold in the winter. I also heard that you burn more of it. Which explained why i got 1-2 MPG less during the winter. If this is the case, you'll pay less but you'll get less miles out of it, so it's about the same. I might be completely wrong, but that seem to be the concensus that ethanol burns more.

Ethanol helps reduce emissions.
More combustion heat in your engine isn't great for the engine, but the greater the heat delta, the more power you'll product. I don't know about any significant heat difference with ethanol.
I'd expect to see that number go up in the future.

Of course too much heat will start to mess up your oil, seals, and eventually your metal components.

its the old give and take. We do need to somehow find a way to bring the fuel power back to the US though. I just hope they build the engine components strong enough.
