Getting into an argument over how much everyone makes is what is stupid. If someone saves up for said 30-40K car then what does it matter what they make? It's easy to just make a budget and save for whatever you want. Not doing THAT is beyond stupid.

And ShyTown91, I'm with Shumby. GTFO of Daddy's money and go do some work for yourself then come back and then talk about real life.

Then again, EXTREMELY wealthy people of course do drive expensive cars. But those people are few and far between.

Most people who drive a 3 series are stretching themselves to drive it. (then again, that applies to any entry level lux car)
Again, true....I believe the typical 3-series owner is someone who wants to be seen driving a BMW, just for the perceived status that they believe it gives them. Ironically, I don't think many people are impressed by a 3-series.

I'd guess that 90% of Americans earn less than 90K-100K per year. An average new car must be at least $30K these days, no?

So should all of those people just buy a new Kia?

That's the problem with buying a 3-series BMW....there's a certain stigma that goes along with it. That's a shame because they are really nice vehicles.

I used to own an M3. I purchased the car because it was a true drivers' machine...the most fun vehicle I had ever driven...plenty of power, great handling & braking, and just a great all-around car. But I just didn't like the stigma that went along with owning the car.

I think average car price (without MBs, BMWs, Porsches....etc) is about 20k-25k Honda, Toyota, Mazda....

I personally prefer used cars because I am not rich and I cannot afford to spend 40-50k on a car and loose 10k in depreciation the first year....I know some people dont like to buy used, so they purchase a Honda instead of used BMW.....

and ps...."cannot afford" and "dont have the money" are 2 completely different things......at least to me.

Hmmm...I did a quick web search and came up with the average new car price from April, 2009 being $28400. I'd think that number is up a little higher today. So my estimate of $30K can't be too far off.

Personally, if I were in your financial situation, I'd probably forget buying a used car that originally stickered for $40-50K and instead buy one of those $25K Honda, Toyota, Mazda cars you mentioned. But that's just me. I'd buy it to own it and save my money in the meantime until I was able to easily afford that $50K car in the future.

Hmmm...now that I think about it, that's exactly what I've done in my own situation. I started out buying average cars and driving them for 6 or 7 years, not worrying about the initial depreciation because I had no intention of selling in the first 2 or 3 years. Now I'm in a position to pay cash for a new car in the price range of the G37.

clearly you did not read anything i read in my post..
a few pages ago on this thread it was being said about how dumb/spoiled rich 16 year olds with cars like these were and i was just trying to make a point: that i paid for a HUGE chunk of my car by myself, with money i made from working, and saving throughout my entire life. now that i am 18 the car is under my name and all future payments, insurance, etc are my responsibility, and you can be sure im taking care of my business because we all know how important credit is these days.
i only brought up what my father drives compared to his affluence because that is precisely what Kolyan did with his friends and their incomes of 100,150, and 200k....

to shumby and highspeed, i may not have to work for a living or the things i need yet, but i sure as hell have to work for the things i want.

A long time ago one buddy of mine saved up every dollar to buy 528 for status.....when we used to go out to bars etc....eveyone was able to afford to spend 50-100 bucks, he usually had 10-20 bucks in his pocket....

I drove 95 Maxima back then...and was in in early 20s

That's a strange analogy. So you're saying that your buddy wasted his money on a car, while you and your other buddies wasted your money on drinking?

Hey, at least he still had his car the next day. You had a Maxima and a toilet full of urine. LOLDOMO

I had fun, just like all kids from college did......he was a cheap *** guy that most people didnt really like. Even today, I would rather spend money on vacations 2-3 times years (not counting weekend getaways), restaurants with my girlfriend, and i personally like electronics and gadgets....so i blow thousands on that too. << if all that is done, my 2 mortgages are paid, i have some money seating in MM account......then i am happy and the rest of the money goes to car.

well and of course all other bills are paid too......2 condo fees, TV, mobile, electric, taxes....etc.

If I didnt spend so much money for things that dont really matter, I would probably be driving 911 whos cousin Cayman S i test drove today
