Memorial Weekend 2012 - Chicago to the IN/KY

I was hoping I could make the trip in the other thread - https://www.myg37.com/forums/mn-g-cr...-autokits.html , but my schedule doesn't quite coincide.

I've done this trip for several years now on two wheels, but the two wheeler is going away, so the G will be left.

Basically 3 day trip hitting some awesome roads in southern IN and KY.

Leave early saturday, return late monday.

Round trip is about 1400 miles, give or take.

Here's what the route from last year looked like.

So far several people have expressed interest. The general idea is to experience some real technical roads. Some opportunities for pic taking, get away from the city, no traffic.

Just looked up daniel boone pwy. For my bike trips, that would would not be technical enough (east of i75, KY-9006, Daniel Boone Pkwy/Hal Rogers Pkwy to KY-80 W - Google Maps right?). The route I have in mind through that section is bit more insane (52, 30, 7, 404, 3, 119, etc)

I don't have a number in terms of hours, but the days break down more or less as follows (originating north side of chicago).

day1: 470 miles
day2: 410 miles
day3: 575 miles

Generally, people can go as fast or as slow as they want. The major emphasis is this is not a race. For those unfamiliar, the roads are extremely technical - blind corners, off camber, elevation changes, multiple consecutive corners, wildlife, and more.

I've done this route a number of times, so am quite familiar and comfortable with the above on 2 wheels. Doing it in a [capable] car will be a new experience for me too.

For those that decide to come, the route will be available in garmin gpx/gdb format. If you don't have a gps unit capable of accepting uploaded custom routes, you can upload it to gps visualizer and generate a google maps display similar to what I have in the first post - from this you can create your own 'printed' route. Or you'll have to follow someone who does. Typically, we wait for the group to regroup at turns and stop signs.
