Semi related- H pipe vs X pipe vs straight pipe dual exhaust
Just watched this- apparently not a huge difference
Good for me because I prefer the sound of straight duals on the VQ. Sounds like a Porsche 911

They're also testing on a larger displacement, lower revving V-8 engine with a carb. The exhaust pulses on our cars are going to be affected differently by the exhaust design than the V8 engine they're testing. Honestly though, given we're working with a fixed exhaust length, inside diameter and smooth transitions/mandrel bending will be more important than the type of crossover (or lack thereof). The crossover can also have an effect on overall sound out the tailpipes.

While the powerbands and phasing are different, we're still ultimately dealing with 2 cylinder banks merging exhaust pulses. If anything we might be less affected by it due to the fact that the VQ has evenly spaced exhaust pulses, while cross plane V8s don't.
I agree though that ultimately generally the pipe parameters matter more, and the biggest practical difference comes in sound. I hate the merged sound- that gives the trademark Chewbacca cry- but the separate sound is very reminiscent of Porsches and the E46 M3.
