Cold Air Intake

Hey all,

I'm looking to get a cold air intake for my g37x sedan. I was looking at the Z1 Motorsports VQ35HR / VQ37VHR Cold Air Intake Kit.

https://www.z1motorsports.com/air-in...it-p-8892.html

This kit seems to be slightly cheaper than all of the other available intake systems out there, so I was wondering if anyone has this kit or if they know of this kit. Does anybody know if this is a decent quality intake or is it ****? Also wondering what the install procedure looks like. Most other intakes require removal of the bumper.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I'd go for it if I didn't already have an intake. Stillen G3 is prob the best. As long as you get the long tube intake and not just the one in the engine bay. Trust me from expirence

Those couplers are HUGE! Kind of an interesting design, using rubber couplers not just for the bend, but all the way to the filters. What strikes me as odd is the angle the filters are presented in this picture. That certainly can't be the way of it on the G... right? No, of course not. They would be facing each other in a straight line.

I wonder how they are secured? From the pics, there doesn't appear to be any brackets holding the filters in place. But I think there would have to be. Weird.

And where's the splash guard? There doesn't seem to be one.

So... I just emailed them those questions. Let's see what happens.

Lastly, $448 is a lot of money for that setup, regardless of comparable pricing with proven kits like Stillen and Takeda. I can't tell if that price is shipped or not, either. Not that it matters, just wondering.

It claims that the couplers are aluminum, with the three available colors. Looks weird to me to say the least.

I don't know in what world $448 is cheap.... I think my Takeda CAI cost me roughly $400 brand new. In all honesty the CAI isn't the best power adder but it's cost so much because your basicly buying two.

Here's a thread on the Z1 CAI, I'd wait a bit and see how the install goes and some reviews. FWIW I think they got the setup for $370 on a black Friday deal.

Here's the response from Z1 Motorsports:

There is no splash shield for the filters. They sit high enough up that they do not have issues.

As for mounting brackets, they do not need mounting brackets. The silicone couplers are stiff enough that they do not move.

Thanks

Joel
Just based on these things, I'm not feeling it. But it's nice to know there are new options out there, and this is certainly an interesting looking collection of parts.

I almost bought these on their black Friday special as they dropped about $60. I have purchased a few parts from Z1 and their parts and service have been great so far.

I like the design better than Stillen in that they plug in on the bottom for a cleaner look. I called and asked them about the rain guard and they said they were in the process of making one so I will wait to see if that happens...

Performance gains seem the same as Stillen at about $200 less on their black Friday special.

I forgot to ask if it was a dry filter though. Anyone know if it is dry or if you have to periodically clean and oil it?

Go with the Takeda or the Stillen until others have gotten the Z1 and reported their results. You cannot go wrong with either of those two choices.

Way better sound of the VQ, thats it! No, just kidding. Its been debated and from what I read you lose some torque but gain a little in the higher tpm range.

The stock system is already cold. It's the best setup by far in terms of ease of replacing the filters.

People buy the aftermarkets for either looks or sounds.

I'll stick with my stock cold air box. I'd rather listen to my exhaust even though it's stock.

^yes that's the impression I got, stock intake is pretty good. Best HP add on is a high flow cat.

This AAM intake looks interesting. And with ID restrictors at the MAF sensors, that you can remove if you want to tune for a big bore MAF. I've never seen that in an aftermarket intake before.

Also without a support bracket or splash guards. Must be a trend, LOL. Although... if you look at the picture, there appears to be something on the underside of the bend on the front pipes. Maybe that's for a connector? IDK. Or maybe that's just a chunk of cement notched out of the floor. Yeah, I'm thinking that's what it is.

Also notice how the MAF sensors are horizontal, each facing the engine.

Anyway:
