R2C Short Ram Intake Install - Potential Issues
R2C Short Ram Intake Install - Potential Issues
So I installed a pair of R2C SRI's tonight. I actually was able to clean the throttle bodies before-hand. The entire install took about 1.5 hours - not bad for a layperson.
After the install I took it for a short spin. I live in Philadelphia and I did this at around 6:30, so I couldn't get all the way on it. Immediately I noticed a low-pitched growl sound from the engine, even at low RPMs. I may notice a diminution of low-end torque, but I'm not sure if this is the case or not. At high RPMs I definately noticed a bit more power - probably a placebo effect but hey I'm not complaining.
Issues
For one I noticed that my automatic windows do not go up all the way. When I press the button all the way down it works and the window goes all the way down. But when I press it up (all the way) it's as if I just quickly pulled the button. Weird. Hopefully this goes away. The battery was disconnected for a while so I'm hoping this is the issue and it will trip back on? Can anybody diagnose this?
The other more pressing issue was the engine temp. After I parked the car after driving it a bit hard for like 15 minutes I opened the hood. The engine temp, along with all of its respective parts seemed VERY overheated. The engine cover, the intake tubes, the heat shield, the filters and the hoses all seemed extra hot. I also smelled that "hot smell" that occurs before your car overheats.
Is this just an issue of waiting for the ECU to learn the new air/fuel ratio? Am I just imagining this? Is there anything install-wise that I may have done/omitted which could be the cause of this? HELP! I should add that I checked the MPG and it was 9! I know after the reason I drove it tough for only 4 miles, but this seems VERY low.
Can anybody help?

Window issue is most likely do to disconnecting battery during install. To fix windows you need to hold down the button to go down then hold the button to roll them up all the way but keep holding for 3-5 secs more so it resets them. I've had to do this at least 20 times.
The over heating issue is probably in your mind. What does the gauge say. The plasitc intake track blocks heat doesn't heat soak like metal. If the gauge is reading the same I wouldn't worry about it. These motors like to produce a lot heat.
The ecu may take some time to learn. Definately more than a 15 minute ride.
And finally I've read a lot of threads where low end torque has been lost with shorter intakes.

What he said^^^
All the procedures for resetting your window & seat memory is in the owners manual and that's what happens whenever you disconnect the battery.
These engines run hot and probably since you were paying more attention to the engine bay during all this you just noticed it more. The R2C adds a bit more metal so those pipes will retain the heat more than the OEM plastic intake tubing as well.
And yes, you will lose some low end but gain a bit over 3500 rpm.

I live in Florida and after even a 20 minute drive, my intakes become unbearably hot. The shields aren't completly sealing with the hood, haven't looked into fixing it, not really sure where to start. The bolts that hold the sides down are taken off to let them go up a little but the hot engine temps are still getting to the intake. Probably going to put the stock intakes back on for the summer and put the R2C back on in the fall. If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know
Thank you all for the help. The window reset worked - thanks for the tip!
I drove the car an additional 35 miles today and I think the ECU already did it's job. The mileage went back up to 21.5 mpg and the car felt much more responsive/faster at high RPMs. Even the low-end torque felt pretty good. Time will tell if that sustains itself.
As for the heat, I haven't checked the engine bay yet but the temp. guage showed all was well. Maybe it's just me focusing on it.
For the last poster, I wanted to make sure no hot air traveled into the intake so I actually placed a small nut between the intake bracket and the housing when I screwed it into the engine. This resulted in a few mm of height difference. It required me to finagle the crank hose a bit but I believe the top of the air box is much more flush with the trunk lid now. Just a friendly tip.

Those heat shields are going to rust over the next year. They're very poorly painted. Its not a big deal, and easily repainted, just saying... Nothing is perfect.
I suspect the heat shields do absolutely nothing beneficial. But the intake kit looks good (particularly in Black Nickle), and it sounds good, and its a fun thing to play with.

I bought mine from the Tunerz Store. He should be a vendor on here.

That's $450 in Black Nickel. Hmm. I bought mine from TunerzStore two years ago in Black Nickel for $385. Either way, they're out of stock... or at least that's what their website says.

Make sure you check the price on the website, though. I contacted a vendor about shipped price on coils. His response was very terse and didn't even give me a quote for all the parts I wanted. Shipped price on the coils was 50 bucks less on the website (cheapest I found) but I ended up getting the supporting parts elsewhere.
