The best thing you can do for these cars, in terms of HP/$$, is to have it tuned on a dyno. It's recommend to do this after intake/exhaust modifications to maximize HP gains. It is not unusual for a decent dyno tune to get 20+ more HP above int/exh install.
The major restriction in the exhaust is the catalytic converter, followed by the muffler. Some high flow cats (resonated or not, your choice on sound...) make a pretty good difference when coupled with an intake. Many people do HFC's and a catback exhaust, some do HFC and axel-back exhaust.
The general idea with the intake is to get a better filter combined with a smoother flow to the throttle bodies. People debate which intake to get all day long, but the bottom line is that our cars come with a somewhat decent intake from the factory, and have two throttle bodies, so the effects of an intake are not as great as they would be on an early-production g35. Short ram intakes (or using high-quality drop in filters plus upgraded silicone tubes) does more for low-end power/sound. Cold air intakes give you more gain in the upper-RPM range. When it's all said and done the difference is usually only a few HP between the two.
Welcome, good luck, and happy modding!
