Stock intake box mod?

Has anyone modded the stock boxes? When I had my (B5) S4 the was a stock air box mod where you a cut the bottom of the box off- part that faced the wheel well- was wondering if this would be something that we could do and pick up some HP was was cleaning my KN's yesterday and was noticing how small the intake boxes port was?

I did this with my dad on his old Dodge Intrepid - cut some holes in the bottom of the airbox that had exposure to the ground.

This was a really popular mod years ago on Saturn SC/SLs as they had a pretty restrictive airbox. I'm not sure our airbox is a bottle neck, but the intake system could benefit from cooler air (as proven with the Stillen Gen 3). Cutting a hole in the airbox may add a little more volume, but also allow more of the hot air within the engine compartment into the intake.

If I remember correctly there was a similar thing with the Maxima's. They called it the "ghetto airbox mod" Do it yourself Maxima airbox modification

Yea cool thanx read that looks like he just left the filter holder out on top tho. That would pull heated air my thought was the bottom on the box near where the box attaches to the frame

I think bypassing the throttle body coolant lines would do more than adding holes or enlarging the box...

LOL....I did the same thing to my 300M.

I was thinking about doing this to the G a few weeks ago, but after I removed the boxes to change the fog light bulbs & getting a good look at how they are designed, I didn't see how it would help any.

From: Framingham Ma,
Looking into maybe opening that side and using a velocity Stack at the end of a short pipe ? Just thinking out loud again

From: Framingham Ma,
Ok so been thinking a bit on what I was going to do. Finally bought some piping and air ducts, The ducts are either going behind the grill or I'm going to cut the front lower grills and mount these behind them in between my LED fogs, From the side on my air box where I cut them out( Side in the wheel well area) What you guys think? Lower Grills( I have a NON sport 09 Sedan) or behind the front grill AKA Still and Takeda? An benefit feed the box from two different spots? I know I may need more piping depending where I go but its a start.

I think the best approach would be placing the duct as low as possible and making the piping as vertical as possible, (straight up to the side of your box). Im in the same boat now designing (<$150) the cold portion of my cold air intake build.... and to think Im only doing this to prevent spending $300+ for a CAI.

Cool project. I would go behind the upper grill like other CAI since you probably don't want to be vacuuming water from puddles.

Do you plan on getting post MAF silicone tubing as well? Would love to see a dyno when you're done
