I am just collecting info into this thread because I plan on doing a similar mod (for fun and discovery). Mounting behind grill pulls colder air than lower grill as heat radiating from the asphalt or highway is warmer:

"air temps 1-2 feet above the ground is actually hotter than it is from 2 feet and above (as measured by DaveO and myself a couple years ago) - black asphalt absorbs heat and continuously is radiating hotter than the ambient air up higher. This isn’t to say its hotter than what the OEM opening is sucking up (I'm not sure how hot it gets down there - but I'm pretty sure its cooler than upper engine compartment).

So, even though it seems like stuffing a tube (whether long ram or a mod like this) is drawing in cold air, it's actually drawing in much hotter air than is being drawn in from the upper intake (through the grille). Which is why a short ram intake being used with the OEM snorkel is actually more of a "cold air" intake than a long ram intake shoved down low (typically called "CAI")."

From: Framingham Ma,
I got one run in on the HW 3rd gear , Do you know what the MAFgm readings are for the GEN 3's from 2500-7k. Looking to compare them. Mine started at 11.63 and jumped to 121.9 by 3k and topped out at 268. )@ 5984.( max I think as nothing higher as it stayed there all the way till redline . Not sure how these compare.

I tried searching for a thread that compares airflow between the popular CAI kits for our cars but came up empty handed. I remember seeing rpm ranges and airflow HP numbers on a chart. Takeda and Stillen had similar numbers. I'll continue searching...

How does the custom set up feel? Did you get a nice intake sound? Does your air box have the big tumor ender it?

Thanks!!

Engineers spend hours on designing these boxes and then people drill some holes on them

Imagine the time spent by engineers designing the bore and stroke of the engine

It feels good and throttle is almost instant, I didn't cut holes in these, Compete stock boxes with silicone tubes feeding them from the front grill.

the big tumor ender it? Not sure what that is but if your asking about he resonator tube things on the side of the boxes no those are gone.

From: Framingham Ma,
I didn't get anything at Lowes or HD they had CRAP LOL,

I bought the CF Saleen brake ducts on Ebay. I also have a set of spare brake ducts off a E90 BMW.

The intake pipes( Didn't use them yet- I can sell them to you?) CXR racing-Ebay

And the silicone elbows and air ducts( Spectre) from Amazon

I can sell you the intake pipes and the E90 brake ducts if you want. You'd only have to get the silicon pipes
