Injen CAI with faux grilles removed?

I'm about to pull the trigger on the Injen CAI and am going to try something different...removing the faux intake grilles for more direct airflow to the filters and not use the red Injen reservoir (so theres not a big red bottle showing through the opening). I live in Sun Diego so rain is not a concern.

I searched but didnt see anyone try this before...Would intakes be much louder now because they are no longer tucked away in a sealed compartment? Does the bumper look like crap with the removed grilles?

As far as I know 2 people have done this. One had a piece that can cover it up at any time, but is opened for track. Another (I think Greg?) added a hole in the fake brake vent for more airflow.

Or maybe you can have the vents changed to an actual grilled vents, may look pretty cool i think, and that way it the grilled vents can also prevent dirts like leaves or anything to fly straight into the filters or the inside of the vents too.

You can always paint the red reservoir in black??

The filters do not actually sit directly behind the inlet, they sit more toward the right of the inlet so this wouldnt be a concern. This is also a good thing for rain (for the rare occassion it rains here) as rain would not be directly hitting the filters.

Thought about plastidipping it but decided against it. Just a lot of work for something I never use. Also, no reservoir = less weight and better airflow to filter . My only concern is having some kind of low ww fluid warning on the dash from not having the pump connected.

I've had mine out for at least 1.5 years, probably more like 2. I've driven through all kinds of rain with it and hasn't been an issue. I painted the red reservoir black with a rattle can.

How much clearance is there between the faux vent and the Injen provided resivoir. I'm thinking of putting in LED DRL foglights and wondering if it will clear that! Need at least 3 inches of room me thinks....

^ what he is referring to is Injens on a rainy day.. I know of two people in SoCal who have had this problem and do not drive through rivers. They've actually both since removed their Injens because during wet weather, their motors starve for air and drive like crap, even occasionally stalling just leaving from their house and driving down the street. I'll try and find you the thread.

i've read those threads about injens and they don't make sense...it's obviously not a hydrolock issue. why would rain be attributed to stalling? it seems more like a faulty mafs or bad install because those 2 have been the only ones i've ever read about having trouble with the injens.

Idk... Doesn't make sense to me either. What my buddy said to me is that his car feels hesitant and sputters for air. Eventually stalling. He leaves his car out over night, and if it's raining, it's as if water settles on the filters and causes it to gasp for air.

that is strange. are his faux vents open? maybe his wheel wells are not secured on? the filters seem to be in an enclosed area. my guess they have an aftermarket hood that does not have proper fitment leading to water commming down the engine bay that way, because i don't see water comming through the vents or the wheel wells...i'm intrigued

Hey guys, i was one of the people who had and issue with the injens too, the car kinda cut out power if i try to rev up more than 3000Rpm, the 1st and second time was a about a month apart, didn't went through any rain, but i did just washed it. But it hadn't had any issues till now from the last time i had that happened to me, and the last time was a few months back.. didn't really find out what really happened. Btw, it's raining season in my country now, and its raining like crazy everyday, and i still drive through the rain and had no issues whatsoever.. so its really a mystery to me...
