Hi all,

Interesting read...AW, thanks for all the research you did! For years I used K&N filters, most often with a nylon filter cover, for all my desert bikes and quads. I never had any real issues, and I rode in the all the SoCal deserts! But when I had my F250 PS 4X4, I read a lot about engine filtering, and I became very concerned about oiled filters and their ability to mess up MAF's.

I also agree the AFE's are probably a better quality item than a K&N, and being a dry type filter, there should not be any oil-to-MAF issues, but it doesn't seem like there has been any showing of how much better, if any, the flow is from the AFE filters over the stock. Does anyone have any data on such as comparison?

I was interested in a better flow, but equal or even better protection, air filter for my '08 G37S, but I would like to know if the only real benefit is a cost savings over the factory paper...due to their re-usibility. I also am a bit concerned re: my extended factory warranty and these filters. It seems like a very easy way to encounter some 'denied warranty' issues with these type of filters...

Take care,

JJ

This is an interesting topic. I always believed K&N's were the best, but the oil concerns me.

I had a prior vehicle on the dyno which was not acting right. The operator pulled one of the plugs and it had pink oil on it. Coincidentally, I had recently installed a K&N typhoon intake on the car an was dynoing for results.

Isn't it plausible for the intake oil to be sucked into the intake tract as well as the engine? What effects will this have in the long term?

Typically an over-oiled filter with the 'pink oil' tends to foul up MAF sensors as it gets sucked into the intake tract. I haven't heard about it traveling much further and affecting spark plugs, I'd imagine that should've burned off already.

you would think, but have you ever seen pink oil on plugs almost identical to the filter oil the cone uses?

The filters definitely clean up well too - I've already done 1 clean on them and will likely do another pretty soon. Simple Green and water works wonders.

By the way, if you look at Injen SRI SP1998P you going to find that the filters on this particular intake made by Amsoil and they dry flow too.
