Safelite windshield replacement
Safelite windshield replacement
Went in to my appointment today, tech said the replacement could not even be started because the a-pillars have to be removed. He could break it off but I would need a replacement before they began. As soon as I got home I looked at videos about removing them and it did seem like a pain but it is doable. I guess they didn't want to be liable if it did break.
I'm just curious if this is the proper procedure and if any of you guys ever had this come up with your replacements. I scheduled a mobile driver to come out to my house next week and I'm hoping he won't say the same thing.
Edit: 2014 Q60s coupe. G37 basically.

A-pillars cannot be removed. Do you mean the A-pillar covers inside the car, the ones you'd remove to reroute the sun roof drains? If yes, you could remove them yourself as a few of the sun roof drain replacement DIYs provide guidance on how to remove them properly.
Safelite is no longer my go to for windshield replacement as they have become very process driven and bureaucratic. In fact, most insurance companies now have their own glass replacement companies setup inside of the parent company.
Calling a mobile repair outfit is a better bet. They will likely chat with you about some of the challenges and you will learn a little in the process.

To add to socketz67's comment, the interior A-pillar trim cover can be removed in no time, HOWEVER, if the EXTERIOR A-Pillar trim has to be removed, then that is a entirely different animal to tame and very risky (been there/ done that/ paid a hefty price to replace).
Correct, they meant the exterior ones. I find it crazy they have to be removed and part of me doesn't even believe them. I have a Safelite mobile mechanic coming here tomorrow so I'm hoping he can do it without it and they were just bsing.
But yea my insurance does go through them but I opted not to file since it's cheaper to pay myself than use my deductible. Worst case I will file if the panels need to be removed but I wonder if they would even approve it.

Don't be fooled, most (all?) insurance companies who have an "in house provider" funnel you to a national glass replacement company, usually safelight. Go with and support a local company.

Just to update if anyone is curious, the mobile guy had the same issues but handled it no problem. I went outside midway and he had the pillars and I think some weatherstripping laying on the roof. He said he thought it was a sedan which wouldn't need this extra work but he was able to get it done. Dude was pretty boss and I guess the first guy I had just didn't want to do it.
So far so good, happy with the replacement!
