Water gets rid of squeak?

Hey guys,

Noticed my car squeaks a bit on cold start up, nothing after it's been running a few minutes. Before I go buy this new belt tensioner, which I think is the problem, I noticed that when I pour water on the belt while it's running, the squeak goes away for a short period of time. Does this tell anyone anything? It is a brand new belt. Just trying to make sure I'm not wasting money because I can't return the tensioner once installed. TIA.

That usually indicates belt slip.

Did you buy a cheap serpentine belt, or a good expensive one? I replaced mine with continental and it works perfectly and it’s similar to oem material that they use on their belt. If it started sqeeking when you installed the serpentine belt then that is the issue. If anything check the tensioner and also the pulleys make sure their is no play in them, and this should be done with the car turn on so you can see the belt rotating and pin point from which pulley it is coming from.

After replacing the belt, and tensioner pulley, I figured out the squeak I had was coming from the alternator (pulley). Alternator was good, but couldn't deal with that squeak. I work for LKQ so I got a used one for like $60.00.

Just FYI.
