Hi all

After reading another thread on oil filter's I have made a switch from my usual brand of filter from the fram synthetic extra guard to the Mobil 1 Extended performance, Now looking up the recommended filter for our car's it says to use the M1-108 filter, I have done 2 oil changes since I bought the car and when I bought the supplies for them the first time I thought that the filter was really small for the size of the engine, does anyone here run a bit bigger of a oil filter seeing as there is plenty of room for one ? by bigger filter I mean the longer one. I have just bought a M1-110 to give it a try.

I've been using the larger one for the Infinti/Nissan 5.6 liter (and the previous 4.5) V8 for my first G35 and my current 37 (about 9 years now), it still fits under the splash pan w/ room to spare. Always had good oil analysis and like that it's bigger than the thimble size OEM 37 filter

 

The OEM seems really small, My last car was a 99 Accord and the wife has a 91 Accord and both of those take a larger filter the the G37.

When you go to the parts store just use 2011 Infiniti M56 to get the correct one.

Size does not necessarily indicate the amount of dirt a filter is able to filter and hold. You should buy a filter based on the capacity rating as well as the ability to filter 99%+ microns of dirt.

 

I agree with what you are saying but when any filter starts to get plugged if you have a larger surface area the oil will flow through it easier for a bit longer, it still equates to more efficient filtration as the two filter's are the exact same price and with any type of filtration the goal is to remove contaminates without restricting the flow of the liquid.

 

Yes I have been using the M1-110 on all of my VQs since my 2004 350z. It even still fits, well barely, with my thermostatic oil cooler plate and all of my turbo oil lines!

 

i've been running a larger oil filter and what i did was cross reference the known specs of the nissan oem filter with other filters out there. if you haven't already known the thread pitch of the oil filter on nissan vehicles is the same as honda vehicles. now honda has gone to a smaller oil filter due to cost savings which are made by fram or honeywell but the original large diameter honda oil filters are made by toyo roki or filtech. filtech still makes the same oil filter and sells it for isuzu vehicles even though isuzu trucks have been off the market. filtech makes a solid filter, plenty of pleats and does not use that cheap cardboard endcap. everything is quality in the filter.

 

What is the thread pitch on our filters ? is it M14x1.5 ? also is filtech also Bosch brand filter's ? If so on the oil filter review thread that I read the Bosch and the Mobil 1 filter's were rated as in the 1 and 2 spot's.

 

It's M20x1.5, I've used M1, Bosch and have lately been running Wix, all seem to be above average IME.

 

as stated by blnewt already the thread pitch of the filter mouth is m20x1.5
you can get a denso oil filter 1502043 or a wix filter 51334. both are larger diameter oil filters with the correct thread pitch and are readily available at a good parts house.

 

Well, I'll be installing FRAM Ultra Synthetic Oil Filter, XG6607, this is a second one I will be using on my car.

What made me pick it was a video when they took apart bunch of filters and this one is very well made. I do my oils every 5-6k miles. Currently at 96k on my G.

 

First off sorry for reviving this dead thread but i feel this is good info and something to think on;

OK correct me if i'm wrong I know this makes some assumptions with filter area inside and actual volume filling the canister but id assume with same brand same model most would be similar
Fram ultra xg9688 stock size 3.14" tall x 3.02" diameter so running volume calculations for a cylinder that would give you 22.49 vol
Fram ultra xg7137 v8 size 3.49" tall x 2.688" diameter 19.8 vol

so the taller more skinny v8 filter actually has less usable volume inside its taller but gives up width ultimately not as much inside has anyone else noticed this, did you notice actually putting more oil in with the v8 to reach full on the dipstick ? it would seem to actually be a smaller filter guys. If I am missing something by all means correct me I was just researching oversize filters to put one on my car and discovered this.

 

The Mobil 1 M110 is the same diameter as the M108, but several mm longer, so you get more volume. At least, I think that's the case. It's been awhile since I changed the oil. (I average about 7k miles per year)
