Oil Capacity

Hey guys,

Just did my first oil change in my '11 G37x. After reading that the oil capacity was 5.2 qts, I emptied the 5 qt container, assuming Id start it then add any additional as needed. After running for about 15 min, then letting it cool for 15 min, I noted that the oil read beyond the "full" dot on the dipstick. Anyone else have this experience?

There is always some oil left inside the engine when you drain it. Always. It doesn't all drain from all the galleys when you pull the plug. Add 4 or 4.5 quarts and check it. Top off as needed.

Is the oil capacity 5qts in the 3.7? The manual says 5-1/8qt so I'm sure what that means. Thanks.

It means the total capacity is 5 quarts + 4 oz. As I mentioned in my earlier post in this thread from 2 years ago, add about 4.5 quarts and then check the level. It does not have to be completely full to the top mark, only between the high and low mark. if you are **** about it you can slowly fill it to the upper mark but don't overfill it. There will almost always be at least 4 oz of oil left in your engine after you drain it, unless you let it drain for a very long time.

thanks for that I understand what they're saying now, 5 and 1/8th quarts. Just confused me at first. Do you ever use more than 5 qts when doing an oil change? I was going to buy a 5 qt jug and didn't want to have to buy another qt if I don't need to.

I use 5 quarts to fill. I have another quart to top off if I need it down the road.

I've always purchased the large 5 qt jugs from walmart/amazon/. I don't recall ever having to add more than that. It's usually right near the full mark or ever so slightly below. I still do as above though. Fill with about 4 qts, then add additional until it's at the full mark on the dipstick.

When draining, are you just lifting the front of the car, or the whole car? If the former, it's possible there's more oil left in the pan.

Thanks. I'll only be lifting the front of the car.

Like BB said, a 5 qt fill and an extra qt for topping off. I use 5.2 qts, always have from our first 07 G35 to our current 37. I also use the bigger oil filter for the Infiniti/Nissan V8.
