Oil Filter choice..

Before I start writing anything else, I do want to say that I have extensively searched and read as many oil threads as I can and I know how it upsets everyone on this forum when a newbie asks a dumb question when its been answered numerous times in various threads. I'm hoping this won't fall into that category...

I recently got a 2013 G37xS Coupe (Graphite/Stone, Prem, Nav, Sport), and its approaching 2700 miles so I'm looking into changing the oil out. From all the threads there are about oil, I've chosen to stick with Pennzoil Ultra (if i can find it) or Platinum if I can't.

My question is about the filter. I have narrowed my choice to either K&N or Mob1 filter, but I can't stand how tiny it is. I read in various posts that people have used the M56 spec without any issues. Is there a significant/noticeable difference in quality or the way the car performs?

For the K&N application, the G37 takes the HP-1008 and the M56 takes the HP-1010. For Mobil1 EP, G37: M1-108, M56: M1-110.

Are there any negative reasons or any reasons at all NOT to use the larger filters?

Thanks in advance for everyone's input!

I have used KN, Mobil and Nissan factory filters. There is no difference that I can tell besides that of the price.

If it fits, it's fine. You can use almost any filter that is designed to fit a Nissan model.

I use Bosch Premium filter but I use the bigger M56 filter, it's about a third larger than the puny G filters.

I use amsoil oil and either the amsoil oil filter or the wix. it is a minor hassle to change the oil due to the shroud. Since I don't put a lot of miles on the G, I change the oil once a year. Included the specs from the amsoil page for the tech obsessed.

I second the AMSoil filter. It's designed to run 25,000miles but I change it every 3. The filter membrane filters out more ppm than most brands on the market. I've cut one open and compared it to a typical fram oil filter and I can assure you guys that there is a proper filter membrane inside made from synthetic materials and metal parts compared to fram and most competitors paper membrane. I trust their products and use them as much as I can

A larger oil filter?
So it fits?

Does a lager filter help?

I couldn't believe the size of the filter when I first changed the oil on my G. My Harley uses a larger filter. LOL I always use K&N in my vehicles. I've never had an issue with any of my vehicles. It's a little more pricey but not much more. I'm with whats been said before though. All the forementioned products are a good choice. I just think it's a preference thing.

OP, the K&N and M1 EP filter have the exact same internal construction. They are literally the same filter, made by the same manufacture. The only difference is K&N has that little nut on top so you can wrench it on/off.

Purolator Pure One PL14610. Same circumference as stock, but about twice the height. 99.9% efficiency. Available at any auto parts store. And economical.

if it's the same diameter and thread pitch/count, then yes, it will fit.

i also do as BL does, but with the K&N filter. the K&N filter for our Gs is the 1008 (i believe)....i use the 1010 in mine. it's a much larger (taller) filter. bumps the oil quantity from 5.25qts to just under 6qts...and obviously has a much larger filter element inside.

Yep, any filter for the M56 will fit, and it WILL still fit under the plastic splash pan w/ a little room to spare

I use Red Line 5w-30 @ 7k mi OCI, M45 filters, Bosch D+ #D3323 or Purolator PureONE #PL14610 (work nearly as well), you can read up on some reviews/comparisons here: Some Filtration Comparisons from the Bench | Oil Filters | Bob Is The Oil Guy
