Engine coolant low...can I get by for a couple weeks?

Hey guys,

I was just checking my air filters today and noticed that my engine coolant is low. It is below the min mark...I can still see some in the container, but it is not close to the min mark. I have no idea how long it has been this way.

My question is how long can I go without topping it off? I am 100 mi away from the nearest infiniti dealership and I am moving in 2 weeks to a place within 10 minutes of an infiniti dealership. That said, I will be driving ~5 miles a day until then and then I will be driving a total of 250 miles to get to where I am moving. Can I do all this with amount of fluid I have?

I don't have a nearby nissan, either. I can get aftermarket fluid at a local shop...but I would rather get the stock good stuff and not mix.

Just top it up with some distilled water. It will be so little added to the overall capacity that the dilution of antifreeze strength will be miniscule.

So you think it's better to do that than wait it out until I move? Thanks, btw.

I'm not sure what you mean. The car has not been overheating or anything--the arrow stays right in the center of the C----H indicator.

Did you remove the radiator cap and actually check the level or are you just looking at the coolant reserve?

As above poster said, that cloudy white reservoir is a reserve. If there's fluid in there at the minimum line I would think you're good. If its completely dry, you have issues. Someone stated just throw some distilled water in there, and thats a good idea. or ycould stop anywhere they sell automotive stuff, buy a gallon of antifreeze for like $5, and put some in the reserve reservoir. It probably wouldn't take that much, and either water or straight antifreeze wouldn't make much difference in the strength(as someone stated above).

Was the car completely cold when you checked it? During cold your coolant level suppose to be at the minimum, when hot the coolants pressure will push more fluid into the overflow.

I checked it this morning before starting my car--there is just a little bit of blue fluid left in the reservoir it doesn't get close to the "min" indicator, but it is not all gone, either. You guys think I can just wait the 2 weeks, then? Or should I pour some Aquafina into there haha.

I say pour some water in, if you dont want to than put it in your trunk ready for if you do overheat, then you will have to. As long as you're not driving around over heating you'll be fine .
