Accidently put the copper crush washer the wrong way

I accidently put on the copper crush washer in the opposite way into the oil pan nut, what can i do? Should i drain the new oil out into a clean bucket and put in back in the engine? I'm scared that i will get a leak

i should have read this before i did my oil change

You have a picture of the washer? I can't imagine there being a right way or a wrong way to install it. It's a stamped piece of aluminum, with hopefully the same OD and ID on both sides.

It'll be fine. I haven't replaced that washer on my Maxima since about '98 and it doesn't leak. It doesn't really need to be replaced. When you tighten the bolt it crushes flat either way.

There technically is a proper way to install the copper crush washer, but as long as you torqued the oil drain plug to recommended specs, YOU'RE FINE. With the amount of heat that plug sees it will expand and force the washer to seal any which way it goes on.

owned nissans since 93 and have installed the copper crush ring either way with no probs. When my grandpa had the 93 max, they installed another copper crush ring on top of the current one and were wondering why there was a slow leak....

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd post my question here, since it is a closely-related topic.

This is my question: Is the oil drain crush washer the same for both an Infiniti G sedan and a Maxima? They use the same filter, and I know the engines are essentially the same. Our 2011 Gx is about ready for another oil change and we live more than 50 miles from the nearest Infiniti dealer. We have a 2 Nissan stores - each only about 20 miles from us.

The last time I changed the oil, I torqued the drain nut to factory specs but it leaked. I had to come back a few days later and put a few more pounds on it before it would stop dripping...so I am sure I'm ready for a new washer.

Copper starts out as a soft metal but it gets work hardened. If you want to do an experiment take a new washer and bend it back and forth with two sets of pliers. It will start out easy to bend then gradually get more and more difficult to bend.

If you reuse the washer enough it will begin to lose its crushable properties. That's why they want you to use a new one every time.

Yes, all Nissans use the same copper crush washer. In fact, if it fits on the plug correctly you can use it no matter what application it's designed for.

Not sure its the torque, I had the same experience in the last two oil changes with new copper washers. Not a huge leak just enough of a dribble to make it greasy and catch some road grit.
I was thinking of trying a different washer those fiberglass looking ones or maybe just a flat metal type.
