I agree ethanol sucks. It's a scam. Sure, it pollutes a little less, but you have to burn more of it... so it offsets.

No I saw that. My points agree with that. Additive packages are added after a company takes it from the pipeline. All companies get their fuel from the same source, and the difference is additive packages added after that.
The last line in your quote about detergents (aka additives) has a keyword in that line..."often". For most companies, thats the case, but there are a few companies where its not just a quart of detergents.
Its very similar to oils. Most companies get their basestocks from the same place, but the differences are usually their additive packages.

The best gas is any top brand without the ethanol in it. That stuff is bad for your car and deadly for 2 cycle engines like weedeaters. I lost a blower one time and learned the hard way what that crap will do. It eats away at the fuel lines and inner carb components of the small engines so imagine what it is doing to our G's. Can't be good. The shelf life is only 2 to 3 months as well.
Whoever got this stuff started should be banned to driving Yugo's for the rest of their time!

I used to have a 67 Chevelle and I did not drive it all that much so I kept a quarter tank in it and used fuel stabilizer to counter act the stuff. It seemed to work OK and I never had carb problems but it was a hassle.

Alcohols can eat rubber but automakers have been using o-rings and gaskets that are impervious to alcohol for a couple of decades now. Shelf life is a different issue and you're right, it's not very long.

I have been keeping accurate records based on my fuel usage since first buying the car. My results are as follows:
Shell - Good performance, high price, decent mpg
Sunoco - Best performance, average price, lower mpg
Giant - horrific performance, low price, better mpg
Exxon - decent performance, average price, best mpg
I have been running Sunoco Ultra 93 the past 8 tanks and can say the performance has never been better, although my MPG is only 16-17 currently. I rarely drive highway so cant give you any numbers there. It all really depends on what you want, how you drive, and what matters most.

You can't compare brands like that without specifying your location. Reformulated gasoline is different enough from gas sold in non-pollution areas that comparison isn't valid enough to create Neddy's matrix. Reformulated gas has lower RVP and generally has ethanol.
Besides, not all brands are nation-wide. No Sunoco stations in Houston, for example.
