Manual Down Shifting Drops two gears

Hello,

I was doing a little Manual shifting in my 09 AWD 7AT and I noticed some weird shifting. I was down shifting and the car seemed to drop two gears instead of one. It happened while going from 7, it dropped to six and then shortly after dropped to 5 (at most a second later). It also seemed to happen going from 6 down to 5 and then dropping to 4.

Is this normal? Has anybody seen it themselves? I guess there is a chance that I tapped the paddle twice, but I dont recall doing that.

Thanks, Charlie.

I've had the same experience. I think it's related to your speed. For me, it usually happens when I slow down a bit and then downshift to 6th. I think maybe the comp downshifts to 5th because of the speed. That's my best guess.

The 7AT really needs a gear indicator when in full auto mode.

That is exactly what happened. The computer automatically downshifts for you even in manual mode, when you go below a certain RPM level for that gear. So you hit a certain RPM level, and the computer downshifted right before you downshifted manually. Hence the two gear difference, yes its happened to me a bunch already.

That is the same thing that I was doing. Same scenario. At least that is a good sign. I read the manual and it said nothing about this being standard procedure, so I would like to know if this is standard, something I am doing wrong, or an oddity with our cars.

the computer down shifts for us automatically, so just worry only about up shifting.

Not sure I follow Lightsout. It is my understanding that there are cases where Downshifting manually is better than letting the Auto do it. For things like going around corners, or getting more power for a pass. Why would they even have a downshift if I was supposed to let the car do it always?

It seems like the car if functioning normally since others notice the same thing. I am thinking that it is just a timing issue where the car was dropping a gear due to automatic just as the paddle is hit. I would just like to know this as confirmed correct operation.

well to confirm..

When im in manual mode and slowing down (pressing the brake) my car will automatically downshift for me.

I haven't tried it at speed cornering, only coming to signals and stop signs.
