Need Help removing surface material from shifter

Need Help removing surface material from shifter

im trying to change the direction of the shifting https://www.myg37.com/forums/showthr...55#post2356555

the only problem is i dont get how to take of the whole surface thing (Picture 3)

please help

what i did was push my index finger against the leather boot and tuck it under the edge of the opening for the shifter. from there, you gently lift straight up.
