G37x 7at Failure Rate

Hey guys,

I follow a g37 Reddit page and have a newly acquired 2011 g37x with 126000 Kms or 78k miles.

The page shows valve body and TCM failures quite often and it's getting me concerned.

I love my infiniti's (I've had 4 previously) and this is my 3rd g37x.

I am wondering. What can I do at this point to preserve my transmission/valve body from failing?

I plan on doing a 3x drain and fill, and am wondering what fluid I should use? Ive been using valvoline max life in other vehicles with good results.

Also, I always let my car warm up for a few minutes and don't drive hard until the car is warmed up.

Any other suggestions?

Our transmissions are the byproduct of Social Contagion (the spread of emotions, behaviors, and attitudes from person to person within a group, consciously or unconsciously influencing perception and even misinformation). Speak with service writers and techs at Infiniti and they will say that the RE7R01A is solid (they mainly see non enthusiasts showing up for service). Speak to someone with a high mileage 3-4 owner G that they are putting alot of hard miles on, the story may change and those users are much more vocal online. Automatics in general are fragile compared to manuals because they are far more complex. So for racing/drifting on a budget, one cannot touch the cost/reliability of a manual.

As a general rule of thumb, change the fluid often. These transmissions already run hot, and old fluid loses hydraulic properties and does not dissipate heat well; it also causes slippage which adds heat and often results in premature failure of the TCM (electronics inside the transmission, not under the dash like other makes). In addition, the shared radiator (coolant and transmission fluid) is another weak spot and once coolant is in your transmission, 7AT death is imminent (Torque Converter and valve body seem to go first). I have looked into replacing my OEM 7AT radiator with one from a 6MT then using an external transmission cooler, but always get stuck in the "works fine now" mindset.

Drain and fills are a popular choice for higher mileage units (4ish quarts). I have 80K on mine and will do another fluid transfer (12 quarts) at 90K (I've done two prior and it still operates like new).

If and when you need a TCM/Valve Body (they are typically sold as a unit), I recommend Nexenzo and will use them when mine finally fails, or look to a VR30 swap as it looks like a cool project (those lose TCMs as well, but are FI and pushed much harder than NA)

One man's perspective.

I agree with your post. I plan on doing a 3x drain and fill as well.

Would you say valvoline max life atf is sufficient? I've been using it in my other vehicles with good results so far.

I'm in Canada and haven't heard of nexenzo, but will keep it in mind!

Thanks

I try to stick with OEM fluid when it comes to the transmission. Z1 or Concept Z offer the Matic-x fluid at a good price. Nexenzo is just an engineer/car enthusiast in CA that has figured out the formula for refurbishing TCMs. He also rebuilds the valve body with OEM parts as part of the service.
