It's called an ashtray.

People used to inhale the smoke from burning tobacco leaves, rolled up into little paper tubes called cigarettes.

Want to guess what this thing is?

Remember when there were ashtrays on the arms of the seat on planes? Smoking and non smoking sections, like there was an invisible wall to keep the smoke isolated.

I even recall my Dad smoking in a movie theatre. In the movie the Exorcist, the Doc is puffing a heater while he's going through Reagan's brain scan with her mom. Times they have a changed.

In cars, they now call the cigarette lighter a "12V port"

I do, and I did. Smoked a pack a day for 10 years before quitting cold turkey. It's been over 30 years, and I still dream about it.

Nic is crazy addictive. I don't envy people caught up in it.

There was a time when 747s had lounges/ piano bars/ etc. on the upper deck- Pan Am and Northwestern notwithstanding.

To the tune of Archie & Edith: "...those were the days."

The little cross-hatched lip in the middle... that was so you could roll the tip of your cigarette and shave off the growing collection of ash.

(sigh) Dirty freaking habit, and I miss it.

The thing that gets me is that Archie was supposed to be 48 at the start of the show. I'm 53 and I look 15 years younger, thinning hair notwithstanding.

Anyway. 2023 work Ford and 2024 wife's Audi have the cigarrette lighter sockets but no lighter. TBH, with smoking having decreased in popularity as much, I'm surprised they aren't ditching those altogether and going with a newer, more robust connection type (say, high current USB).

@Rochester - I don't miss smoking most days. But playing pool I feel like I need one to balance out the cue hold, and/or some days at work recently I'd not mind one. We'll see how the next three years go (I'm an attorney and the law right now is... fluid)

That's what bothers you? Really? IDK Mike, that's more of a you-problem than it is Archie's.

What bothers me is the line, "Gee, our old LaSalle ran great!" Not only did LaSalle close shop in 1940, but it was a luxury brand of GM just under Caddy. There's no way in the world that Archie Bunker drove a LaSalle.

Maybe if it was "Gee, our old Hudson ran great..."

Nash. Definitely would have been a Nash.

Oh I'm glad we don't age that horribly these days. Smoking likely part of it, and people's livers likely aren't as abused as much either.

My folks belonged to the American Banking Association and they had black-tie boozefests every other week - I can remember them going. That would have been the mid-late 70s.

Now we live healthy and extend our lives by 20 years. Not the good 20 mind you, just an additional 20.

Anyway. Cars have tons of nannies now too - bring back the days of the Viper with 400+ HP, RWD and zero traction or stability control. Also 911s that like to swap ends when lifting.

Well, Nash did acquire Hudson, resulting in AMC. So, OK... Nash.

If Archie actually had a car (did he?), I suspect it would have been a Rambler. And nobody ever said, "Gee, our old Rambler ran great."

Have you seen the youtube channel of the guy who does truck astrology?

Look for those last two words as keywords. Bearded country guy, funny as hell. Mostly older trucks.
