Rear Diff Decision
Rear Diff Decision
Hello,
I have a 11 G37 Journey Sedan. My next upgrade would be the rear differential. I'm looking at the open diff 3.692 gear code KF and also locking diff 3.692 code KG, they are both compatible with the automatic sedan. It is so much easier and cheaper to get the KF, my only concern is acceleration performance on the open vs locking diff. If there is minimal to no performance hit with the KF compares to KG, I will pull the trigger and do the KF swap.
Could someone with experience give some advice/feedback?
Thank you.

Having tracked my G35 to a huge extent, supercharged my g37, and tracked my very modified Cayman to a huge extent, I have a bit of a bias. But open diffs are terrible.
That said, I burned out the stock LSD (it's fluid-based so there is a lifespan) on my G35, so I switched to a Quaife helical limited slip. While not perfect, it is maintenance free and warrantied for the life of the car, even on the track. If you track your vehicle, add a finned diff cover or you'll overheat your diff fluid. Ask me how I know. Twice. Also, if you have rear-wheel steer on your G37, you will have to mill down a few of the fins due to the RWAS being physically too close to the stock diff.
On the G37 I switched to a Wavetrac helical LSD... I did not see much difference to my G35's Quaife, but I don't track the G37 so apples != oranges.
I'd suggest a helical limited slip. A good shop will be able to install it in your existing diff housing in a couple hours - it needs to be shimmed to tolerance and I wanted no part of that process - and then you never have to mess with it except change the fluid every few years.
Good luck!
