Clunking when shifting into drive / reverse from park Fixed by TSB: ITB13-008B

Posting this to help others with this weird issue. A while ago I would get a clunking noise when shifting from park to drive or reverse. Old shop diagnosed it as the rear passenger side CV axle. So I had a brand new OEM one put in and the sound went away. Flash forward to this year I had all wheel bearings replaced and the noise came back. I then had the drivers side rear CV axle replaced with another new OEM unit. That did not get rid of the noise. I knew about the axle TSB, but the thing with the axle TSB is more of a clicking sound and not a clunk. The TSB is also for accelerating or moving, not shifting the transmission into gear from a stationary position. I figured it could not be anything else though as the car has a brand new OEM front and rear driveshaft that were installed correctly as some would say maybe it was the u-joints or something with the diff flanges. I decided to have the axle TSB performed and very importantly to use the special grease the TSB calls for, M77 Molykote grease, nothing else. The noise I would hear was a clunk, not a high pitched click. It would mostly come from the rear and sometimes the front, you could hear it inside and outside the car.

I used new front axle nuts, cotter pins, rear axle nuts, rear spring washers, rear cap adjusters, and cotter pins. The FSM calls for new axle nuts, washers and cotter pins, I just had everything replaced as the cap adjusters can widen from repeated disassembly. I got a small 1oz container of M77 grease:
Amazon Amazon

I had this TSB performed, everything torqued to spec (rear axle nuts have a torque range, very important) and proper amount of M77 grease applied to the CV axle grease flange seals. I had leftover paste after all four axles, so this small jar is more than enough. After the TSB was performed no more clunking at all!!!!

My car is a 2011 G37X Sedan, these are the parts I used for my VIN:

40262-2Y00A (Front Axle Nuts, 2X)
40073-0L700 (Front and Rear Cotter Pins, 4X)
40262-1CA0A (Rear Axle Nuts, 2X) VERY IMPORTANT, THE REAR USE A DIFFERENT AXLE NUT, IT WAS THIS PART NUMBER FOR ME.
40037-1CA0A (Rear Spring Washers, 2X)
40263-1CA0A (Rear Axle Cap Adjusters, 2X)

Hope this helps someone.

Excellent post Krzysztof47. I put this off for a year or so (two different dealers told me that it's harmless), then finally decided to have the dealer do the work last year when I was having some other work done. The annoying "clicking" sound has not returned.

Thank you. That's good you were able to get that corrected. The thing with mine was the sound was a "clunk" and not a click, which is why I did not try the axle TSB right away.
