The how much is my Sedan worth discussion thread
I'd like some help. We're thinking of selling my 2009 X; we just don't use it as much now that we're both working from home. We have my wife's might Volvo wagon (I made sure to get the T6 at least - turbo'd straight 6 Polestare tuned to 325hp) to lug the kids and stuff around.
It's 'easy sell silver', low miles 78K miles I think, minor mods. 7speed auto, I'm not sure you could get an all wheel drive and manual. It was literally a trade in from a little old married couple who lived in Florida half the year and traded it to a Toyota dealer.
mods/upgrades:
just had fast intentions high flow cats installed (driver stock one had a typical rattle)
Z1 intake tubes
AFE high flow air filters
stock 18" wheels with all season tires
19" sport wheels (had them refinished) with 1 season old G-max summer tires
370z sport rear sway bar with new end links and bushings
strut tower bar
paddle shifters with the correct trim pieces around it
changed the silver interior accents from the silver to wood (I have the silver pieces)
Custco stainless HVAC ***** - love them with the wood!
basically I have list of 'best recommended mods' from our forum here and the list of maintenance items I found here.
maintenance:
replaced the large stock frame brace that X's have; painted with several coats of new paint as they seem to rust out easily (common issue)
I did the 60k service:
proper plugs- NGK rutheniu
changed all fluids- both differentials, transfer case with Mobil 1 synthetic.
cabin filter, cleaned air filters
changed coolant, new radiator cap
changed/bled brake fluid
new serpentine belt and tensioner (need to check if I did the tensioner)
cleaned both throttle bodies and new felpro gaskets, cleaned both MAP sensors
filed all engine grounds and added 4 more straps (it did improve the stereo sound)
new headlight bulbs and polished the lenses
LED interior lights, backup lights and added the Infiniti logo lights under the doors (kinda silly but I like them)
I had a good shop change the tranny oil with proper synthetic using the 3x method (made it shift much smoother)
updated tranny software at dealer - improved transmission shifts even more
Oil changed every 5-7.5k with Mobil 1 synthetic and mobil 1 filter or german equivalent
Newer Duracell battery
I used to have my own shop and I'm rather intense on maintenance. I have a 1 inch thick file with all the docs that will go with the car.
other things I've forgotten right now.
Bad? I have been planning to get the front bumper painted. I backup up and scratched it pretty good on a big rock I couldn't see. The right rear bumper has scratches too where I caught the downspout on the house again backing up (notice a theme?). A few long scratches on a few doors that strangely coincide exactly with the height of a 7 or 9 year olds bike handle, but inquires to suspect parties have returned definite "I know nothing".
Oh, the shop who did the cats found the center Y pipe had a small leak; I've got a new larger stainless one to put on, just haven't had the time.
So, what is she worth do you think? I've looked an prices are all over the place. Where to sell, here? Cars and Bids? facebook marketplace?
Thanks for any insight and opinions!

Finding a situation like that is worth a lot to someone who's into cars, more so because the seller is often motivated to pay it forward.
Do I have the bumpers sprayed or leave as is?
sell one set of wheels separately or go with the car?
prices are all over the place.
Agreed Rochester. I get all giddy when looking for a car and come across someone like yourself who gone deep into the upkeep and work. That's why I'm thinking here or cars and bids might be a fun spot to sell. But how much to ask?

I've found that the Facebook groups are notorious for lowballing prices for Gs (particularly autos); so I doubt you would find what you're looking for there. But with the meticulous maintenance and tasteful mods I'd try a private sale on the forums and if that doesn't work sell it to the re-sellers.
Thanks deep, that is some good advice. I'd forgotten about going to some of the corp resellers, at least
I've seen a few cars where people are pretty honest and go 'carmax offered me $$$, I'm asking $x more for a quick sale'. I've also had a few private/shady dealers telling me to go to carmax and they'll beat that offer - before things went crazy and carmax offers some real low ***** to cars they don't want, as they just turn them around an auction them to other dealers.
Carvana and Zoom, had forgotten about those!
...I would like to save a bit and get an Aston V8 Vantage...wonder if booster seats would fit in the back...

Figured I'd give a follow up here since I kinda spawned the idea for this thread.
2012 6MT Sedan with some basic track mods, 95k extremely well taken care of miles, clean ca title, zero rust sold for $19.8 first week of June 2022.
That was my listed price and I wasn't willing to accept anything below it. Happened to find a buyer and I let her go.

Well, good for you but boo generally that you sold your G
The dealer I bought mine from back in 2018 emailed in May offering me $20k sight unseen to buy mine back - I paid $18 for it.
//I said no.

I do miss it but its not something I couldn't live without. While it wasn't necessary to sell, I can now use that spare $20k to better financially position myself/family rather than have it sitting in the garage on an unnecessary second vehicle.
In all honesty if the market wasn't what it currently is, I'd still own the car considering I only paid $12.5k back in March of 2020.
I've been looking for another track car to pick up and use for HPDE events, something not soo nice yet reliable, that I can beat on but I'm going to hold off for a bit. If the recession goes the way I believe it will, used car prices will fall and I won't be paying stupid money for something that previously cost $7-10k.
Better yet I may just be able to pick a nicely prepped car from an owner who needs to move the car.
@2GoRNot2G I had the car listed on OfferUp, Craigslist, and FB market place. A lot of inquires on FB but no one serious. OfferUp is a joke. The buyer emailed me through Craigslist and we went from there. He drove up about 5 hours from Orange County early in the morning with a friend and picked it up after a test drive and looking it over.

Well I wanted to follow up; given the nearing implosion of Carvana and Vroom I was curious to see what their offers would be, and I put it thru Carmax too.
This is for a grey/silver 2009 G37x sedan with 77k miles; very good condition, no issues, leaks etc, clean carfax (i.e. no accidents) . A few scratches/door dings at worst, sport package, parking sensors, bose sound.
Vroom: $4,500
Carvana: $9,500
Carmax: $7,400
Hilarious from what they were paying a year plus ago! However, Carvana is almost out of cash and so far in debt I assume they won't survive. Vroom has a computer estimate of 77% likely bankruptcy, same story, burned through millions. (Carmax I was curious, understanding that they only put cars on their lots about 10 years or newer. Everything else they just dealer auction them, so basically below trade-in.
l will say kudos to Carmax, they included with their offer a KBB report showing a dealer trade-in value of $8,300 to $9,900. Not even nothing to show retail. Basically saying, if you're stupid enough to sell it to us...then OK.
I thought the market for used cars would have softened significantly by now, but the prices are still way up there. Crazy market!

Get that folks can find themselve in a variety of circumstances when seeling their car, but...
Why on earth do so many folks not take the time to sell it themselves privately? Must be one of the highest ROI acticities you can do. Even if you burn 10, 20, 30 hours. The incremental gain is usually in the 1000s. Convinced that if everyone did a back of the envelop calculation, dealer trade-ins would almost never happen (and that savings on tax savings usually doesn't come close to making up for it).

The amount you lose on mods when selling makes it completely not worth selling if you're heavily invested. If you just want a change, I think being patient and trading someone else straight up is the ideal. Now if you have a mostly unmolested car, that's an entirely different story.
