Backup Camera Intermittently Working

My 6MT backup up camera does not come on when I put it in reverse. Sometimes it does after 20-30 seconds. The screen is not black or anything it just doesn't come up.
Is there a sensor under the shifter? I haven't checked the cabling in the trunk, maybe its a frayed cable?

Do your "Backup" lights turn ON when you put the car into REVERSE? If YES, then the switch and relay are good. If NO then that is where the search begins... In the meantime, I would start by inspecting the wiring inside this conduit:

There have been some failures as a result of the constant flexing of the wiring with the trunk opening/closing.

Edit: 6MT cars do not use a backup lamp relay, just a switch.

Thanks. So when I put it in reverse no reverse lights and then about 10-15 seconds reverse lights come on and camera comes on. Are there any fuses to check? I'll check the trunk wiring.

Being the the lights/cam come on after a delay indicate the fuses and the wiring in the trunk are likely good. Now the focus leans toward a failing switch (6MT cars do not use a backup relay). Relatively easy to check, but hard to access. Here is what the switch looks like (photo from my350z.com):

And where the switch is located:

If you have a multimeter you can do the continuity checks as described above. If it were me, with the key ON/engine OFF, I would unplug the switch connector and run a jumper wire across the two terminals (in the connector). If the lights come on then the switch is likely dirty/going bad.

Similar Problem

Thanks for this very useful post! I think my problem is similar but not the same. It started last fall and didn't magically get better over winter storage. When I put it in reverse nothing changes on the screen. Whatever was on the screen remains displayed. There is no black screen and there are no guide lines displayed. Back up lights do not come on.

The odd thing is that I'll go for a drive and then magically it is working. I have tried waiting for a while (a couple of minutes) when it doesn't work and nothing changes. I don't think this is electrical as it isn't random and can be repeated. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

In the end it turned out to be my switch that was faulty. It's located on the transmission house and it wasn't picking up when the car was placed in manual. Had it replaced and backup camera has been working ever since with no issues. Good luck!

Thanks! I was thinking that was what it might be.
