Obligatory Coilover Question For a n00b
Hi All,
I’m SUPER new to the world of coilovers. I have a 2013 G37xS Sedan that I’m looking to upgrade, but I do NOT want to lower it. I just want the benefit of beefier suspension.
That being said, I think I’ve narrowed my choices down to three brands (from most expensive to least):
- Fortune Auto
- BC Racing
- Godspeed Auto
The first two are tried-and-true, but I hear little about the Godspeed brand. Could you guys provide input on any of them?

FA is the best of the three. That should be the choice you go with IMHO.
BC is good stuff as well, but I may be wrong, those are usually built to lower the car a lot, you might not be able to maintain stock height, again I could be wrong.
Do NOT buy anything from Godspeed, stay as far away from that brand as you can. Godspeed does not gotchu.
@Hugh Jorgens has just put the adjustable Tein shocks on his sedan and could provide pretty good input. That's a good option, you can maintain your OEM springs but have adjustability to the damper for that beefier feeling.

I had FA on my G and they were fantastic. They are pricey but are a great set-up and customer support was super responsive when I had questions. Nothing wrong with BC either. As you said; they're tried and true. It's worth noting, going CO or any aftermarket springs are going to lower the car some; especially compared to the 4x4 stock suspension. You can max them out and get pretty good clearance. At max height and 17s, I had no issues going over speed bumps in parking lots as long as I was going slow.
@PancakeLover the X suspension is as soft as baby poo and the stock tire has a 55 sidewall; can't really go softer....

Idk who makes stuff for the AWD platform. Does FA make anything?
If you want stock height, FA is your best bet. They're customizable so you can order a set with long enough springs.
I think FA is your best bet anyway. The build and ride quality is significantly better than BC or Godspeed.
You gotta wait like 4-6weeks to get them. But...its worth the wait.
Sure you can. Just not with off the shelf springs and shocks.
First...are you sure your current shocks and springs and bushings are still in good shape?
After that, if you're still not satisfied, you'd need to spec out something customized, the ride height would need to be tall, and you'd have to do some research. Plus spend some money, have patience, etc.
FA can probably help you get started. Or maybe try air ride.
Its probably cheaper and easier to just sell your G ans buy a ES though.

that’s reassuring - I decided to pull the plug on just those! I found this review that seemed to suggest that they do work for AWD (including the numerous third parties that also market it for the X Sedan):

Due to the wide body kit, I have more than six weeks of prep remaining so the wait is no problem lol.
Shock/strut is replaced as well as Spring. For AWD, the rear assembly is a divorced set-up so you'd have a replacement strut and then a replacement spring that sits in the bucket in place of the OEM one. Lowers the car for a more aesthetically pleasing look; especially compared to the stock X set-up. Ride rebound is adjustable; allowing you to control the stiffness. Car will have a lot less body roll and be flatter when in the turns. Paired with an upgraded sway bar set-up, its a very confidence inspiring duo from a handling stand-point.
You'll need to run adjustable rear and front camber arms to dial in toe and camber. Without that, expect a great deal of uneven tread wear.

But in more familiar slang terms, "coilover" just references to a suspension system what has an adjustable height spring and matched shocks. Even if you're keeping the divorced rear setup on the G...you buy "coilovers" in slang terms.
In difinitive terms... "coilover" refers to a coil spring that mounts over the shock. The stock front suspension on a G is a coil-over shock suspension. The rear is obviously not such a setup - its a divorced spring setup. At one time they were so happy. Now...they're divorced.
