Corroded Electrical Harnesses
Corroded Electrical Harnesses
Hi all. New member here with a quick question. Took my 2012 G37X sedan to a local audio shop in June of last year to have a sub box installed. They ran the power cable through the firewall by way of the body grommet on the passenger side of the car. Lately, I have noticed water on the floor (after rain or car wash). Then, I was having issues starting the car (crank, no start). I had the car towed to the local service center (Christian Brothers) a few weeks ago because it wouldn't start, and when they unloaded the car from the flat bed, it started right up (of course!). The service center did a quick diag, didn't find anything glaring and didn't charge me anything. Well, same thing happened this morning - crank, no start, water on floor on passenger side only (it rained last night). (I've also noticed that the windows don't roll up automatically all of the sudden.. this started recently.). Had the car towed again, but this time it did not start when it was unloaded. CB ran an electrical diag on it and found that there was corrosion in the engine and body harnesses from sitting in water which appears to have come through the body grommet...where the audio shop ran the power wires through. Upon, inspection of said grommet, it's torn and was never sealed (pictures attached). And it's clear this is where the water is coming through. CB showed me the grommet and the corrosion on some of the harness connectors. My question is.. I know this grommet sits right below the drain below the windshield, so could enough water make it's way through the grommet, over time, to cause the corrosion? Three options - 1) Replace both electrical harnesses completely ($3700 + labor), 2) Source a suitable harnesses from a reputable salvage yard and splice into the existing harness, or 3) Clean the corrosion from the existing connectors.
Thoughts? Opinions?
Incidentally, I am working the audio shop no this, as well, as I believe this is the result of their installation.
Thanks in advance!

the sunroof can cause water on the floor of your car. as for the electrical issues not sure, but good luck.
if the audio shop is paying for it i would have a new harness installed. and that gromet properly sealed.
