Wish I could say the same lol. Bought mine 2 and a half year ago at 31k on the dash. It's at 65k now and I'll be keeping the car for another 2-3 years. *Fingers crossed*

 

I am also looking at a 2011 G37 with 97000 miles. It's a sedan w/automatic. VIN decoder says it is the "Sport Appearance Edition". Will a PPI by Nissan(no Infiniti dealer local) reveal the gasket issue? How about oil consumption? Car rides nice with great pull. Only thing I think it might need are front brakes as they sound like they "grind" a bit. Would this being a "Sport Appearance Edition" affect the type of rotors/pads it might need? They are asking $13,995. Thanks for any help here.

 

Infiniti offered the "Sport Package" as two entirely different things depending on whether the car was RWD or AWD. In a practical sense, the Sport Package on the G37xS Sedan was "sport appearance" only because it had all the Sport Package trim without any of the actual high-performance components included in the RWD Journey with the Sport Package, or the 6MT which had the Sport Package by default.

Never heard of a "Sport Appearance Edition".

If that RWD Sedan you're looking at has the Akebono BBK, sport-tuned shocks, close-ratio steering, VLSD and staggered rims... then it's a Journey Sport, and a worthy car. Otherwise, it's just another bread & butter G37 Sedan. A fine car, but nothing special.

$14k for a six to seven year old G Sedan with 100K miles... that doesn't seem like an appealing deal.

 

It is RWD. The decoder says "Sport Appearance Edition" The trunk badge has "G37" no X or S so I assume it has none of the sport high performance stuff. How concerned should I be about the gasket and oil consumption?

I suppose you can assume things when you look at a car's badge. But for genuine visual cues that the car is a RWD Sport, look at the brakes, the wheels, the side-sills, the front bumper, the seats, etc.

Concerned about the gasket and oil consumption? What oil consumption? Meh, it's a car. All cars have design flaws, some better known than others. If the timing gasket has been replaced, great. If not, you're probably still OK statistically speaking, but at least you're aware of it.

 

My research has shown that some people with the HR engine have had significant oil consumption issues. Also, supposedly the repair for the gaskets can be done far cheaper than the $3K-4K some dealers quote. Apparently just the gasket can be replaced instead of the entire case which cuts the labor by more than half.

 

Could be. There's always an oil burner somewhere. Over the last six years here, I'm not aware of people complaining about the VQ37HR, but I've not actively researched it either.

I've seen people claiming $1400 for the timing cover gasket repair.

^ oil consumption was a somewhat common issue on the '05-'07 rev-up G35 35HR engine found on 6MT Sport models. the one with 298hp, not the regular 280hp 35DE engine.

the VQ37 has not had widespread oil consumption issues. that would not be a concern of mine if searching for a used G37.

the timing gasket on the other hand is a known issue, albeit still infrequent for the general G37 population. it is hyped on this forum which skews the perception. however, it did happen to my car and was thankfully covered under warranty.

 

If it wasn't covered you may have a bit more to say regarding the issue

In the 6-7 months I've been a member, I've seen a handful of people post about the issue; mind you, it's 2017 so you'd figure a lot of the 08-11 models would have blown the gasket by now and posts would be rare. Take that number, multiply by 10 years, divide against the total number of users and then take into consideration the amount of owners that aren't on the forum and the number might shock you. Like Roch and canuck mentioned, statistically, you're more than likely fine but at least you're aware. I'll also add, unless you have a solid understanding of these cars do not attempt a gasket repair on your own...If you can have a specialist do it for cheaper - Great. If you're thinking about doing this yourself or with a buddy in your garage in one afternoon and a case of Miller you're gonna have a bad time...Disregard if said buddy is a specialist.

Oil issues existed in G35 models. I've yet to hear of a G37 eating oil but I'm sure it's a possibility. If it gives you any comfort, Edmunds has the VQ ranked in the top 25 V6 of all time, in two different models (370Z and G35) along with it's TT relative the VR motor. I'd say it's proven itself capable.

 

ok, think im going to pull the trigger on this today. Given the 96k miles, the delaer is offering a 90 day 3k warranty so should i make it go out before then? lol

Apologies if this is too late, but as a recent buyer of one of these cars. I would recommend that you check all the common water intrusion points for molestation (sun-roof drains, wiring harness grommet near the battery, lower windshield trim). If it looks like parts have been removed multiple times or are messed with and not aligned it could be a red flag. My car didn't have any of these signs and short of asking the owner if he'd leave it in the rain for a week and intermittently drive it a few times then sit it then drive it and then park on a hill and then park it flat and then.... you get the idea. I don't know how I would've known...
Sorry, rant over. This to me is the weirdest problem with these cars...

 

lol NW_6mt Surprisingly, the few others i looked at did have panels in the hood near the fenders or the ones on the lower windshield misaligned maybe due to an accident and repair and replace job. Some with nothing listed or reported in the carfax or anything. This one i am looking at is the one i didnt find anything fishy on. Looking to see if i can work out the deal today and i will post pictures when i get it, then AFTER I detail it myself.
