License Plate Frame

I'm going to ask what I think is definitely a weird question, but so be it.

What kind of license plate frame is on your car? I have an illest brand one on there right now (tiny, crappy pic below), but I feel as if I'd like a change of pace. (I'm remembering it either fitting strangely or not looking right without a frame on it whenever I got it) I could always go with the alma mater frame, but show me what you got.

Ps, Brad, Kenny, BB, other wonderful mods, please move this to the appropriate area if it shouldn't be here. Thanks!

We can leave it here, although rocking an "illest" anything isn't really allowed here

Something like this is pretty decent looking, or if you have a specific brand on your car like Stillen you could use one of their plates.

Rocking my alma mater on the rear, and a smoked license plate cover for the front.

If I can find a black framed one, alma mater is probably how I'll go.

I think branded and custom-text plate frames are really tacky, and only one step removed from the embarrassment of dealer-installed plastic frames. They're busy, and often conflict with the design on the license plate itself.

However, I also think the plate needs framing... but it needs to be subtle. So for the last 10 years, I've been using Custom Cruiser plate frames on all my cars. You can find it at any auto parts store, Walmart, Amazon, etc. Very inexpensive, $7 tops.

It has four bolt holes, with the flanges *behind* the plate, so there's a continuous, consistent framing effect. Match it with some black or gun-metal fender washers, and you have a really clean look.

Amazon Amazon

Here's a consideration people should look into before getting a frame: if you're thinking of getting a *covered* frame, with Plexiglas or whatever, not every state allows it. New York doesn't.

I use weather tech with clear cover on my plates. Looks nice, give the rear some depth.

What license plate design?

IL has some new plates with half of Lincoln's head chopped off.

Haha, wow. That's kind of funny, having Abe Lincoln peeking around from the side of the plate. To your point, most plate designs suck.

I still have the default IL plate design with tiny head in the middle.

Plate frames with sayings and stuff on them are rice IMO. I do run a clear plate cover though, and the only reason I run it is because of someone cutting the corner of my plate off to steal the registration sticker.

^Agreed. I don't put that rice crap on my car, even the one from my college. Just a nice simple black frame.

To me, it’s best to go with no frame at all. Most frames are either tacky, self-serving or a cheap dealer advertisement.
