Will Be Purchasing a G37, Need Tips and Advice Please.

Hello everyone,
I will soon be purchasing a G37x or xS depending on the availability and price.
Listed below are my questions, i will Greatly appreciate any feedback regarding the questions, Thank you!

1. I have heard a certain year has a better paint quality vs some, dont know what years to be exact, If someone can tell me that would be great!

2. I have heard a co workers EX35 exhaust note with Bullydog tuner, and maybe intakes, did not ask yet if he has intakes or not but he had the tuner for sure and it sounded incredible but i must add it was -20 Degress Celsius outside.

I want to know if its really worth spending nearly 1200-1300 dollars on Tuner & Intakes or if there is another route to get better sounds with lesser cost?

3. If it is the Sport model, will it have Brembos? I do not prefer Brembos as maintenance costs are high for them.

4. Also heard the G37x model and G37xS model have differences in overall ride height, sport being the lower one. Is this true?

5. Can this car be equipped with a staggered wheel setup? Previously owning a 540i Sedan, I have grown to like staggered rims.

6. Most 2010-G37x or xS used are with almost 60k - 80k miles on them, will they be problematic? I heard these cars are great in terms of reliability, but are their any particular issues i should watch out for?

7. I have seen some people with G37s on this Forum and they have changed their headlight housing colour and basically re-did the whole headlight with the result being amazing. Is there anyone on the forum that does this as a service? If i can ship my headlights and pay someone to have them done. Or its a DIY type of job?

Thanks Again!

Hello and welcome I can answer most of your questions!

1.Don't know about the difference on the paint I never heard there is a difference. I would recommend a 2012 and up because they less probability of having the inferior rear timing gasket leak and 2013 even better

2.VQ sound really nice with intakes and exhaust and is definitely worth it. I run top Stillen Gen 3 Cold Air Intake , Motordyne ART Pipes and Top Speed Y back exhaust and sounds great! There are other options such as full catback like ARK, Fast Intentions, Motordyne
Is it really worth it?? Depends on you expuse you won't be seeing many gains but I think you will like the car a lot more of modded and a tune is beneficial for mods. Uprev and ECUtek are great.
3. Sedan XS won't have big brake kit only RWD Sport Sedan will and X coupe and S Coupe. They come with Akebonos not brembos

4. Um about the ride difference there not that low especially the awd. The x sport sedan is sport appearance and I don't think the suspension is any different than the base x.

5.definitely can have staggered setup and there is thread on here to help

6. They are reliable cars just have to have it inspected but like any car have extra money aside for things that can occur.

6.yes there is people that do custom headlights depending what side of the country you live in. I Sent mine to Ohio with a really reputable guy with G headlights modifications

Good luck!

Everything above is a great summary. Only thing I can add is these vQ engines seem to love boost and it doesn't seem like there's much that needs to be done in order to get them running mean. You can try to save some cash and pick up a used SC kit for 3800-4500 and build the trans for another 5k. Seems like for another 10-12 you can have a real nightmare if you track it or drag it. Other than that, the VQ is maxed from factory basically and bolt ons might net you another 20-35 pending how much cash you want to throw at it. Seems like CAIs and a cat back with resonates test pipes with a tune is the way to go. Looking at roughly 2500 for those two bolt ons and a tune. Car should be scooting a little more by then and not sure if you need much more as a DD...

If you can expand your budget (maybe by putting off some mods) I'd look into a 2012+ model, these have the improved oil gallery gaskets. The pre 2012 VQs have the inferior paper gaskets that cost upwards of $2k to R&R if they fail. It's not inevitable but something you should be aware of. As far as AWD staggered setups, here you go, and welcome to the site!

Thanks for the link above, helped me a lot.

My budget has changed a bit and now I am looking at different cars but the Infiniti's relaibility is what keeps me coming back. The gas mileage is what I dont like about the G. Consumes almost like a V8 after higher mileage.

Now Im looking at BMW and Audi (dont like Audis much). Just dont know what to expect from the BMW in terms of reliability. Im aiming at 2011+ models second hand with max 90,000 -125,000kms.

Compared to the G, the 2013 320xi and 328xi I have exceptional gas mileage, power is less true but the 328xi apparently is faster than G37x in terms of acceleration ( Dont know if this is True). But again the BMW 3 series feels like your sitting in cart so its not as comfortable as the G.

Another choice was a 2011-2012 528xi but its a bit out of budget and god know what maintenance would be like on it vs the G.

Well, if you want reliable, an infiniti will be superior to BMW or Audi for that. By that I don't only mean that the BMW and Audi have a tendency to have issues more frequently, they also tend to be pricier to fix.

I can confirm that a 328xi is not faster than a G37X(my friend had one and sold it for a WRX Wagon). I'd say its more comparable to a 335XI (Although slower by a tad). The 335xi can be modded to be quick cheaply, but the repairs are steep. Gaz mileage is ****ty on the G37Xs though, its a thirsty V6.

Keep in mind you aren't buying a G37 to own a racecar unless you drop some decent $$, as stated above by RMB5190. Although, they are reliable cars that are fun to drive, especially considering the fact it is heavily RWD biases, so you get the best of both worlds.

My 2 cents.

Although, at the end of the day what are you after.

Reliable, decently quick car? If its 0-60 and track times, this isn't the right car without throwing a decent amount of $$.
