I live in PA and the weather has been especially cold this week, in the teens. A couple times already, my car does not want to start in the morning. I push to start, the engine starts to turn over but it then bogs down and turns off. I've learned that I can put my foot on the gas as it turns over, and that will allow the car to idle without shutting off. I feel like that shouldn't happen. Anyone have that problem or have a solution?

 

Could be a lot of things, whens the last time you had the throttle body cleaned?

 

That's actually on my to-do list. I haven't had it done since I bought it in July of 2015. I have an oil change coming up at a local dealer, do you think it would be expensive for them to do? There's a youtube video on how to do it, and I have the tools, I'm just too busy with work right now to get to it.

 

Seems like Dreday1s solution may be correct. However, I'd also check the battery.

I know I had to change mine last year.

 

My car has been doing the same thing. I did a bunch of research and mot people fix this by cleaning the throttle bodies. It could be a defective throttle body as well but start by cleaning them.

I plan on doing this in the next few weeks.

 

If you had no issues when it was warmer, I would guess that your battery crank amps are lower. Dealership told me last week that my 2012 cranking amps are low, I can feel the delay and see the flickering on the dash lights when I started up in single digits° .

It's been really cold here in chicago too. Last time I ran the car it was around 10-14F outside. The car cranked slower than usual, but did fire right up. I replaced the battery a year ago (~Oct 2015). Replacing the battery is a fairly easy DIY, but not something I'd want to do in subfreezing temps outside.

 

We got down to near -20 over the weekend, the G never let me down. Did it sound a little rough when firing the ignition on a cold start? Absolutely.. But it always turned over.

 

Not sure if this would be helpful, but I had some failed starts before last year during winter and spring. And dealership couldn't find the issue and of course the problem never occurs there. Until a CEL came on; EVAP CONTROL SYSTEM PRESSURE SENSOR. Since then no issues.
