High Mileage Maintenance Reccomedations
High Mileage Maintenance Reccomedations
Hi All,
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post this(please move it if it is)/ if the topic has been covered before (I did a search and didn't find anything)/this is too long winded....
So the situation is that I'm at over 125k Miles/200K Kms, and was wondering if there are any recommendations or experiences with maintenance that anyone cares to share that they specifically encountered at this mileage or above.
In the Infiniti user manuals that I have reviewed all the service recommendations/intervals end at or before 125k miles and the only advice beyond that is that the intervals start over at that point. which is fine for most general maintenance. The problem is, "lifetime of the car" parts, since Infiniti appears to consider the "lifetime" of the car to be 125k miles and provides no recommendation on such parts beyond this. Notwithstanding Infiniti's definition of "lifetime" I suspect many people will not junk their cars at this mileage and will want to keep them operating them far beyond this when they "lifetime" parts may start to inevitably fail quite frequently. For many parts it may be a matter of comfort/smoothness but there are certainly some that will be catastrophic.
An example of this is the timing chain/waterpump. On our cars they are considered "lifetime of the car" parts and "Non serviceable", which is fine below 125k miles as mostly the only trouble people get below that mileage is noise from the timing chain guides. certainly nothing catastrophic but as these parts continue to wear I'm not confident that they wont start failing at some mileage beyond the "lifetime" of the car as defined by infiniti or won't be so out of spec (i.e. the timing chain) that it would be a good idea to replace them at a certain point.
So it would be helpful to know what other's experiences with failures/ preventative maintenance are above 125k miles so myself (and others) can get a sense of things to watch out for at that point
For the purposes of this thread lets assume that the following have been done before 125k miles so we don't have to discuss them (let me know if there are other pre-125k mile maintenance tasks that should be added):
Oil/filter change (:P)
Transmission fluid
Differential fluids (including AWD where applicable)
PCV Valves
Hoses
Coolant
Brake pads
Brake Fluid
Rotors
Struts (but not springs)
spark plugs
Air/cabin Filters
Serpentine belt
Differential bushing
Edit:Added on suggestion:
Throttle Body Cleaning
Some of the things that I suspect will need replacement above 125k are as follows (feel free to comment or correct me on these as these are the things I'm trying to gain insight on):
Wheel Bearings (I've actually had to do this below this mileage)
Tie-Rods (inner and outer)
Bushings-Steering rack
Bushings-control arms
Transmission Mount(s)
Engine Mounts
Pullys (not sure which ones)
Timing Chain
Water pump
Power steering pump
Adjusting Valves?
etc.

How long have you had the car? Unless you have service records never assume something has been done. Items such as transmission fluid are a gray area as far as recommended intervals (at least w/ the Auto trans).
What year is your G? If it's pre 2012 you may want to think about going through the timing realted parts since that rear timing gasket is an inferior design and has been prone to failure. The 2012+ Gs have a revised gasket.

I've also done about half of the post 125k suggestions I made
I was concerned about the timing belt in particular the water pump going sometime soon and causing a catostrophic failure.
I have read about the rear timing gasket failure all over the place but I understood those failures were at a very early mileage...i.e. if it was going to happen it would have happened already. The other thing is to change the timing chain/water pump you don't need to remove the rear timing cover so I'm just wondering if that's also something I should think about (the rear gasket failure) cause it actually makes it a much more involved job.
If you have a pre 2012, then I would definitely plan on getting the new gasket, once you're already into changing the timing chain and related parts it's not much more to get to that gasket at that point. The reported failures have been scattered as far as mileage, it seems most common at around 75k but it's not a part that I would neglect to change.
Nice to hear that you've had the G for 3/4ths of the mileage so there's no surprises as to what's been done.
AFAIK the control arm bushings aren't available separately and must be a complete control arm purchase (but there may be a way to get them & service them but ????)
Cleaning throttle bodies should be done too

lol, ive done the throttle bodies about three times...i left them off the list because its just a cleaning but I suppose its fair to include them.
wrt the control arms...I was able to track down the bushings/ball joints for the lower front arms, but the cost after getting them pressed (i don't have a press) was almost as much as brand new arms so I just bought new ones...i assume the math is similar on other ones..
....other than the timing chain/water pump, I haven't been able to find bushings for the steering rack or advice on valve adjustments/maintenance and i'm very curious about these 3 in particular...
oh and btw I do all the work myself
