Oil Door Flap

Hi All,
Anyone have issues with the oil door flap bolts? I broke both them off. Any chance Infiniti can repair this? Do they sell replacement bolts at the dealer?
What a garbage design, I think 2 snap clips in the plastic that you could remove without a tool would've been easier..I can't imagine if I had to pull the entire splash guard underneath off. Would be a PITA.

Plus this trap door drips oil everywhere and gets in the way. Left a few nice spots on the garage floor.

Thanks for help
Jason

I believe the oil filter flap was only for the g37x. Every one else has to removed the entire splash guard. You may have to try and make a clip and from now on remove the entire thing for oil changes.

My 07 G35 RWD sedan and my current 09 RWD G37 Sedan both had the oil filter, drain plug flap on the underpan. The holes in the pan for the bolts get elongated so now I use bigger fender washers under the bolt heads, but still hanging on, and this thing's been through hell.
Jason, what I do is use a heavy hydraulic jack to hold the flap back when I do the oil/filter change, never had a drop get on the underpan. You can also use wire to tie it back.

I doubt that's something the dealer will cover, and what's a handful of 10mm fine thread bolts anyway, under $4-5 bucks I'm guessing. Now if the heads snapped off and you still have the rest of the bolts in your chassis that might be another story.

I have an X and a flap(s). I take off the whole splash-guard because, as was mentioned, it can be a big drippy mess otherwise. Blnewt seems to have come to an agreement with his flap. I have not.

Also when the splash-guard is off, I get a good look at the underside of the car to check for any lurking issues.

I have a 6MT, and no oil-filter flap in the splash guard. I have to remove the whole thing. It is a PITA, I won't lie. This topic comes up from time to time... some have the flap, some don't. It's odd.

My advice is to establish a new SOP for each time you change the oil: soak the bolts in penetrating oil while the cover is off. I've done that on my last two oil changes, because I observed they were starting to get corroded and difficult to thread/unthread.

^^^^

Great advice. Mine are looking okay but I'll do a little soak next time to keep them tip-top.

My 2011 G37 Journey has the flap and I like it.

My 2004 G35 does not. It sucks to have to remove the entire "skid plate" It only takes 2-3 minutes but it's a pain.

The three plastic push-pin retainers go in the middle of the panel. Put those in first, and it makes it easier to re-mount the panel.

The rest are all very basic, M6 hex-head bolts with tapered tips and fixed washers. The same kind of bolt you find on just about every car from Japan. Seriously, every car. Some are 20mm, and some are 25mm. But it really doesn't matter, they're all interchangeable.

I usually put a bungee cord from the flap to the front grill, to hold the flap open while doing the oil change

I do the same thing, except I use 2 bungee cords and stretch them up into the engine bay.

I highly recommend Tollboothwilley's aluminum splash shield which has an oil plug/filter door. Saves you so much time and much more durable than the factory plastic splash guard.

For anyone concerned about their rusting bolts on the underside shroud... Looking at the Z-Speed website, it seems they're selling a 20-pack of replacement bolts for $12+.
