Shifter boot replacement

I have a 2010 g37. I want to replace the shifter boot so how would I go about removing the old one.

Wrap your fingers into the boot at the trim edge next to the heated seat dials, and pull it upward; it will unclip with a little bit of force. Of course, then you have to unscrew the shift ****... which is usually something that destroys the ****.

So I should just leave it as is. Why does it destroy the ****.
