All good...though I have to agree with the above assessments. Rattles are excessive. I dread the rattle chasing when I put the sub in. But it is definitely the most fun car I have owned to date (and the best looking). It turns heads, the exhaust sounds awesome, should get another 150k miles out of it, and I look forward to getting in the car every single day. For the price I paid as a 5 to 6 year old used car with 100k on it, there's not much more I could ask.

That's great. I think g37 is very reliable car. Engine major/minor, transmission, cooling, electrical, suspension are all near perfect scores according to Consumer Report.

I think it's weird that body hardware and integrity vary from year to year.

Consumer Reports knows very little about cars and how to compare them, they basically treat a car like a toaster and then look for the toaster that works the longest, is easy to operate, and makes the most toast for the money, they couldn't care less about power, handling, or anything to do with fun, they just care about toast. I don't buy a car that will make me the most toast, I buy a car to have fun in it.

The fact that their so-called reliability ratings change between the years during which the car underwent NO changes just proves that CRs are idiots and their ratings are useless.

That being said, however, G37 does have a couple of issues ALL of which are also present on vast majority of other cars on the market. Thin paint will chip after years of driving on the highway. That's what clear bra and touch up paint are for. Use it. There are a few rattles here and there, especially on G's with firmer suspension, that's just a fact of life, you cannot have firm suspension and not have to pay for it. Most rattles can be fixed in a matter of minutes, if you've been driving with a rattle for years and do nothing but complain - it's your own damn fault and you deserve it.

Interesting point. I use Consumer Reports only for reliability. I don't use them as a reference when it comes to driving dynamics.
But I must say, from my experience over the years, they are pretty spot on when it comes to reliability rating.

Heh. They rated the car I just had lemoned as the best thing since sliced bread. They outsource quite a bit of their testing so I don't pay attention to anything they have to say.

But to their defense, people will get lemons with any mass manufactured car. Having a lemon is not a determination of what is a good car.

Oh I absolutely agree. I think the thing for people to keep in mind about CR in regards to cars is the following:

1. They are treating it like a toaster(as someone mentioned above)
2. Their "reliability" ratings are based on PREVIOUS years data. They basically average it if there was no "redesign" which can be an issue as paint hypothetically can change when the car does not.

This being said I'm not shocked to see people complain about the paint. My wife's Acura chips and scratches just by looking at it as well. When I worked for one of the Japanese auto manufacturers as an external auditor, the pennies they spent on paint was eye-opening to say the least.

Yeah. I've found myself cringing at anything touching the clear coat on my G. My son (13) opens and closes doors and leans on the car like it's stainless steel or something. Drives me absolutely NUTS!

Yep, those are the two things that really annoy me, the chip & swirl happy paint, and the body/glass panel isolation~both about the poorest I've seen w/ current cars in this price point.

I'm also not impressed with the paint, I try to stay at least 2 car lengths behind on the highway and the fender and hood is still a mess.

But one thing I have been very impressed with is the strength of the windshield. I've had a quite a few stones hit it pretty solidly at highway speeds, enough to make me cringe because it was pretty loud but I look and there's not even a scratch. I've had cars where tiny pebbles hit it and the thing starts cracking within a month.

Funny you say that, my windshield is cracked about 6 inches on the passenger side from a rock chip near (but not on) the edge of the glass. I've been procrastinating badly on getting it replaced, so to the windshield's credit, the crack has not grown at all since it first showed up.
