Maintenance Socket sizes

Hey guys, I just bought a 3/8" impact wrench for maintenance and mods, and I am putting together an impact socket set. I bought deep socket SAE and Metric sets, but I know the car has some larger sizes than the set includes.

I've done a bit of research but can't find any definitive answers.

What are the largest that are used? I know lugs are 21mm.

Thanks in advance.

pretty sure a 21mm socket is going to be the biggest for routine maintenance components. caliper bolts are big, but closer to 17mm IIRC. and for that size and up i prefer a 1/2" drive, but then i don't have air tools. just good 'ol elbow power.

+1 for 1/2" drive.

I'd also make sure to go with 6 point sockets.

I thought that I read caliper bolts were upwards of 22-23. Could be wrong though.

I may be swapping the 3/8 impact for 1/2. The torque rating is 10ft lbs different. Not much.

Take a look, tell me what you think:

Replacing brake pads Infiniti G37 sport brakes | G37 Akebono big brake pad replacement

Looks like the Akebono's have a 22 somewhere according to this DIY. Edit - that may be for the lugs.

Depending on what you're doing, that might not be enough. My 18 volt Dewalt impact driver wasn't doing anything on front shock through bolts. 1/2" breaker bar did the job.

I've only replaced the pads on my akebonos, but it reads like the caliper bolts are 22 mm.

I don't mind using a breaker bar for a little. I just absolutely despise taking wheels off without an impact. Especially with coilovers. Can't. Stand. It. haha.

I actually just cancelled my order for the 3/8" and wen't with the 1/2" Drive.

I'm realizing a lot of these bigger sockets aren't available in 3/8" anyways. Only 50 dollars more for the 1/2" drive.

I can get a 1/2 -> 3/8 reducer for the smaller ones. Should work just fine!

I use a flex head ratchet and sliding T handle with a 12" extension and deep well sockets for lug nuts

I'd be careful using an impact on a 10mm or even 12mm size bolts. Chances are they aren't torqued enough to require an impact and you risk breaking off the head. Don't ask me how I know this
